She wanted to respond, to justify herself, but she knew arguing would only make things worse and she wanted this to be over soon so she chose to keep quiet.
Elena leaned in closer, her eyes narrowing. “You know, it’s not just about courtesy. We’ve been in the dark here. We haven’t seen you on holidays, birthdays, nothing. You’ve vanished. People are noticing. And your absence… It hurts. You don’t understand how humiliating it is for us to have our own daughter ignore us so blatantly.”
‘Please give me a break. Alina groaned mentally.
Silas joined in, his voice firm. “We’re not just speaking for ourselves. Business associates, friends, everyone notices that you don’t check in. You’ve built this life for yourself, yes, but at what cost? You’re engaged now, living with your fiancé, completely absorbed in him, and yet you neglect your family. Don’t you feel any responsibility?”
“I didn’t mean to neglect you.” Alina lied with a straight face, she could care less about them. “I’ve been caught up with work and… other responsibilities. I thought—”
Elena interrupted sharply, her voice dripping with false hurt. “Thought what? That we wouldn’t mind? That we’d forgive you automatically? That you could just step back into our lives whenever it’s convenient for you?”
‘Bitch please shut the fuck up.’ Alina screamed at Elena in her head.
Silas shook his head, his eyes stern. “We’re not unreasonable, Alina. But you’ve made choices. Choices that distance yourself from your own family. You don’t even ask about the company, about our wellbeing, and now you’re engaged to someone rich, someone important, and yet, nothing. Silence. We hear about you on TV, we see your successes everywhere… but we don’t hear from you.”
Alina took a deep breath, nodding slowly. She knew where this was going, the conversation was building toward their ulterior motive, as always.
Elena’s tone softened momentarily, but the underlying manipulation was clear. “We don’t even expect you to abandon your life, but a daughter should care enough to check in. To let her parents know she’s safe. You’ve left us wondering, Alina. And that… that is hurtful.”
Alina kept her expression calm, letting the guilt wash over her just enough to appear real. “I understand. I’m sorry for making you feel that way.”
Elena’s eyes softened briefly, then sharpened again. “Good. Now, after months of worry, after feeling abandoned, we called you here. And we need something from you.”
Silas leaned forward, his gaze intent. “We’re not here to rehash old grievances. But before anything else, understand this, Alina: we need you to act as our daughter, as our connection. There’s business to be done, contracts to handle… and we expect you to help us, as family.”

Alina nodded slowly, already anticipating the next step, the real reason they had called her here.
Silas leaned forward, his expression turning sly. “The company isn’t doing well lately, you could help me get another project… you know, something your fiancé could help with?”
Alina kept her composure and smiled, just enough to remain polite. “I’ll talk to Lucian about it. I’ll see what I can do.”
Then Elena shifted, her tone tinged with expectation. “And since we are on the topic, your sister is back, I thought it would be perfect if you could give Seraphina a position in Alinova.”
Alina froze, her brow furrowing. She turned to Elena, her tone blunt. “That’s not possible. She can’t be given a job there.”
Over her dead body would she allow Seraphina to work for her company.
Elena’s voice rose, incredulous. “Selfish! Wicked! You can’t even help your own sister? After all she’s been through? What you put her through. She is in this mess because of you!”
‘Seraphina was banned because she stole my design and tried to pass it off as hers. That’s why she isn’t allowed in the fashion industry. Alina’s patience nearly snapped, but she held herself steady
“Lucian would never allow me to put her in my company.” She said instead in a calm tone. “He doesn’t even know I am here at the moment.” She lied. “If he finds out I’m giving her a job, she’ll be arrested again. He still hasn’t forgiven her for stabbing me.”
Elena opened her mouth to retort, but Silas interrupted sharply. “Drop it, Elena. We’re not here to argue about family drama. I only care about the contract. Don’t push it.”
Alina exhaled, relief washing over her. For once she was grateful for Silas’s selfishness “I am sorry for not being able to help Seraphina…” She wasn’t sorry at all. “…but I’ll speak to Lucian in respect to the contract as soon as I get home.”
She stood, smoothing her skirt. “I have to go. Lucian and I have an appointment.”
Silas waved his hand dismissively. “It’s fine. Go ahead.”
Alina hesitated briefly, then added, “I will just use the restroom first.”
With that, she slipped away from the tea room, her heart pounding as she quietly made her way to Silas‘ home study, keeping her movements light and discreet.
Alina slipped into the study, closing the door softly behind her. Her heart was pounding as she went straight for the desk, her eyes scanning the drawers.
She didn’t know exactly what she was looking for, but she needed something, any clue that could lead her to uncover who her parents were truly working for, or even the person behind it all.
