AUTHOR’S POV.
The door swung open, and she froze again. There, standing in the doorway, was Seraphina.

“What… what were you doing in there?” Seraphina asked, her eyes narrowing suspiciously as she stepped
closer.
Alina’s lips parted, her voice caught in her throat. Seraphina’s gaze was sharp, cutting, her head tilting slightly as if she were already piecing together a story in her mind.
“I asked what you were doing in there,” Seraphina pressed, her tone low and edged with suspicion. Her eyes flicked past Alina toward the desk, narrowing further.
Alina’s heart hammered. Every second of silence tightened the noose around her. She forced herself to keep her expression neutral, though she could feel the heat of Seraphina’s stare searing through her.
Before she could form a reply, a voice came from behind them.
“Oh! There you are, Miss Alina,” Maria called gently, stepping into the hallway with a warm smile. “I was just about to come find you. Remember that book you left behind in the study the last time you visited? I moved it to your old room for safekeeping.”
Both sisters turned. Seraphina’s eyes flickered with doubt, her lips curling faintly in disbelief.
Alina seized the lifeline. She gave Maria a small, grateful nod, then turned back to Seraphina with a calm smile, masking the storm inside her.
“Ah, no wonder I couldn’t find it in the study.” Alina played along mentally thanking Maria for coming to her aid.
“I am sorry I didn’t inform you earlier.” Maria smiled apologetically.
“No worries… Thank you, Maria.”
Without waiting for Seraphina to say more, she brushed past her and made her way to her old room. Her pulse hadn’t slowed, but she forced herself to look unhurried as she entered, scanned the shelves, and picked up a random book, any book that would make the story real enough. She held it firmly against her chest before walking back out.
Seraphina was still there, standing in the corridor with narrowed eyes, arms folded. The suspicion didn’t leave her face, but she said nothing.
Alina moved toward the exit, her steps steady despite the weight of Seraphina’s stare burning into her back.
At the door, she turned to Maria, her expression softening. “Thank you.” She said quietly, her tone filled with sincerity.
Maria gave her a reassuring smile, a silent acknowledgment of the narrow escape.

With the book still in her hand, Alina stepped out, her relief masked beneath a composed expression.
The afternoon sun hit Alina the moment she stepped out of the mansion. She let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, relief washing through her as the heavy doors shut behind her.
Her phone buzzed just as she reached the car. Glancing at the screen, she saw Talia’s name flashing.
She answered, her voice quieter than usual. “Hey.”
“How did it go?” Talia’s question came quickly, her tone edged with concern.
Alina slid into the backseat, forcing herself to sound steady. “They called me there because they want me to get Lucian to give them a project.”
There was a pause before Talia’s voice rose, sharp with disbelief. “Are you serious? God, I’ve never seen people more selfish than them. Your own parents using you like that?”
Alina pressed her lips together, glancing out the window as Jordan and Lee exchanged brief looks in the front seats. “Jordan, drive to the mall.” She said quietly.
“Yes, ma’am,” Jordan replied with a nod, pulling the car into motion.
Alina returned her attention to the call. “Well adopted parents but yeah.” Alina corrected.
“Adopted parents or not, they are the worst.” Talia said fuming.
“That wasn’t even the worst of it.” Alina told her.
Her words made Talia gasp softly. “Oh no…There’s more?”
“Yes.” Alina’s voice grew tighter. “Elena wants me to give Seraphina a job.”
Talia’s response was instant, outrage bursting through the line. “What? As if…,there’s no way she expects you to let that crazy person work for Alinova! Has she completely lost it?”
“I know right? It’s the audacity.” Alina said.
“Hope you didn’t agree?” Talia asked,
Alina scoffed, a small bitter laugh escaping her. “Of course not. I told her no, bluntly. That I can’t let her work there. Not after she tried to kill me. And if Lucian ever found out she was working for me? He’d have her arrested immediately.” Her hand tightened around the phone. “Thankfully, Silas only cared about what they could gain. He didn’t seem interested in whether Seraphina got the job or not.”
“Unbelievable. I swear, the nerve of those two.“Talia exhaled loudly, still bristling. “What was her reaction though? I would have paid to see it,”
“She blew a fuse obviously, going on about how I was a selfish sister and Seraphina was out of job because of me bla bla bla, honestly, I drowned most of it because I couldn’t care less.” Alina rolled her eyes as she recounted that conversation.

“I hope I get the chance to give Elena a piece of my mind someday,” Talia spoke in a tight voice. “So you left after that?”
Alina leaned her head back against the seat, her voice dropping slightly. “Not really.”
“What did you do Alina.” Talia’s voice grew suspicious.
“Before I left, I went into Silas‘ study.”
There was silence for a moment on the other end, then Talia’s cautious voice. “Why? What were you looking for?”
