Lucian didn’t miss a beat. “Not in this lifetime,”

She chuckled again, shaking her head. “I thought as much.” Then, with quiet conviction, she added, “But no, Lucian, I’m not saying no. I’m still very much interested in marrying you.”

There was a pause, a sigh of relief she could almost hear. “Good. Then let me ask you again…how are you feeling? Are you still uneasy?”

Alina leaned against the railing, eyes drifting toward the horizon. The weight in her chest she’d been carrying for days… strangely, it wasn’t there. Not this morning. Not since she’d opened her eyes to the sound of her girls bustling around.

“No,” she admitted softly. “Not today. I feel… steady. Excited, even.”

“That’s all I want,” he murmured. “For you to feel steady. I’ll carry the rest if I have to.”

Her throat tightened. She wanted to tell him how much that meant, how deeply she loved him for it, but words felt too small. Instead, she whispered, “You don’t know how much I love you.”

“I do,” he countered gently. “Because I feel it. Every time you look at me, every time you say my name. That’s enough.”

They talked like that for a while…

Alina leaned her elbows against the cool railing of the balcony, the city stretched out beneath her as she watched people below already up and about. The phone was warm against her ear but his voice was even

warmer.

“You sound like you’ve been awake forever though.” She murmured.

Lucian’s chuckle rumbled low and easy. “Because I have been. Ace insisted on checking every inch of the venue’s security…twice. By the time he finished, there wasn’t much point in trying to go back to sleep.”

Alina laughed softly, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “So you’re blaming Ace for you being awake at four in the morning?”

“Entirely,” he replied smoothly. “But don’t pretend you’re not amused. You love it when I suffer through his paranoia.”

She smiled, biting her lip. “Maybe just a little. I mean, someone has to take care of you in my absence. It might as well be Ace.”

“Careful,” Lucian warned in mock seriousness. “That sounds dangerously close to betrayal. And on the morning of our wedding too.”

“Oh, please,” she teased. “You’re marrying me in a few hours. There’s no going back now, even if Ace wins the favorite award.”

Chapter 235

Lucian’s voice softened, losing the playful edge. “You think I’d ever let you go, Alina?”

Her chest tightened at the sincerity lacing his tone. She whispered, “Not even in this lifetime, remember?”

“Good. His reply was quiet, reverent. “Because that’s the truth. You’re mine, Alina. After today, you will be fully and utterly mine.”

Her heart skipped, warmth flooding her face. “You say that like you’ve been counting the minutes.”

“I have,” he confessed without hesitation. “Every single one. And after tonight, you’ll carry my name. Alina Blackwood. Say it.”

She froze, her lips parting. The way he said it…it was both a command and a caress, the weight of forever tucked into four syllables. She tested it, her voice barely above a whisper. “Alina Blackwood.”

Lucian exhaled sharply, as though the sound unraveled something deep within him. “Perfect. That’s exactly how it’s meant to be.”

Alina swallowed hard, caught between a smile and tears. “You make it sound like I was never meant to be anything else.”

“Because you weren’t.” His answer was simple, but there was steel behind it. “Even before you knew it, you were mine. And today only makes it official.”

Her lips curved despite the lump in her throat. “You’re going to ruin my makeup before it’s even on.”

He chuckled again, lighter this time. “Then I’ll take responsibility for fixing it. Or smudging it worse, whichever happens first.”

She laughed, her tension easing. “You’re impossible.”

“And you love me for it.”

“That I do.” She leaned her cheek into her palm, feeling that familiar ache of tenderness.

“Tell me something… why did you really call? Was it just to torture me with the sound of my new name?”

Lucian hesitated, and when he spoke, his honesty brushed against her like velvet. “I called because I needed to hear your voice. Because the world feels too loud today, and the only thing that quiets it is you. And because I wanted to make sure…make absolutely sure that you’re really not having second thoughts.”

Her breath hitched. “Lucian…”

“I’d understand if you were,” he went on gently. “It’s a lot. A Blackwood wedding. A life tied to mine. The weight that comes with it…it’s not light.”

“Lucian,” she interrupted firmly this time. “Listen to me.”

There was silence, but she could almost see his eyes on her, like he was standing right in front of her instead of miles away. “I’m not having second thoughts. I can’t wait to walk down that aisle and become your wife. I’ve been uneasy these past few days, yes, but not because of you. Just… a feeling I couldn’t shake.”
