The room was wrapped in silence, the kind that pressed down on the lungs and made every breath feel heavy. Alina lay motionless on the bed, her lashes resting against her pale skin, her chest rising in shallow rhythm. The soft hum of the monitor beside her was the only proof that life still pulsed in her veins.

It wasn’t anything serious but Darius insisted she was placed on a drip and a heart monitor.

Lucian stood at her bedside, one hand gripping the bed rail as though his hold alone could anchor her to this world. His jaw was tight, his gaze fixed on her face with the kind of intensity that betrayed everything he refused to say aloud. Darius stood a few feet away, his broad shoulders stiff beneath his tailored coat, while Luna sat quietly on a nearby chair, her fingers clasped together in prayer. Damien lingered near the window, his expression unreadable, his eyes flicking from Lucian to Alina.

The silence broke when the door creaked open. One of the Evergreen guards stepped inside, his posture stiff and his face pale.

“Sir,” the guard said, his tone strained, “there’s been a situation.”

Darius’s head turned sharply. “What situation?”

The guard hesitated, glancing briefly at Alina before meeting Darius’s eyes again. “The police car that was transporting Silas and Elena was ambushed on the coastal road. The officers are dead.”

Luna’s breath hitched, and Damien straightened immediately. Lucian’s head lifted, his gaze dark and unyielding.

“Ambushed?” Darius’s voice came out cold and sharp. “By who?”

“We’re still investigating, sir,” the guard continued carefully. “From the CCTV footage, a group of armed men intercepted the vehicle. They took Silas and Elena alive.”

Luna pressed a trembling hand to her chest. “Dear heavens…”

“Search for them,” Darius ordered, his tone like the crack of a whip. “Comb every route, every road leading out of the city. I want them found.”

“Yes, sir.” The guard bowed slightly before hurrying out of the room.

The silence returned, heavier this time, weighing down on everyone like an invisible shroud. Lucian’s gaze didn’t move from Alina, but his mind was far from still. Every part of him screamed to act, to hunt down whoever had done this before they could get the truth out of Silas and Elena, to end it with his own hands… but he stayed rooted beside her, the veins in his arm tightening with restraint.

Minutes passed in suffocating quiet before the door opened again. The same guard returned, his expression grim.

“Sir…” he began, voice lower this time, “we’ve found them.”

Luna rose instantly, her hand clutching the edge of the chair. “Thank goodness? Where?”

“In an abandoned warehouse near the old beach docks,” the guard replied. His voice faltered, eyes lowering, “They’re both dead.”

For a moment, no one moved.

Luna’s knees gave way slightly, and Damien reached out instinctively to steady her. She has always been soft at heart. Darius’s jaw tightened, the muscle in his temple twitching as he exhaled through his nose.

“Any leads?” He asked at last, his tone steely.

The guard shook his head. “None, sir. Whoever did it was careful. We’re still gathering information.”

“Keep looking,” Darius commanded, his voice low but firm. “Find out who’s behind this.”

Darius knew whoever was behind this didn’t want them to find out the truth about who Silas had been working for, and now more than ever, he wants to know.

“Yes, sir.” The guard bowed again and exited the room, leaving behind a silence that buzzed with tension.

Lucian’s gaze lingered on the closed door before turning to Darius. “Why did you stop the wedding?”

The question was quiet, but it cut through the room like a blade. Darius’s eyes flicked to him, impassive, unreadable.

“Lucian-” Luna began softly, but Lucian didn’t let her finish.

“You owe me at least an answer,” he said, his tone tightening. “You could’ve spoken to me privately. You could’ve given me a reason before humiliating not just me but Alina like that in front of everyone. But instead, you ended the ceremony. Why?”

Darius didn’t reply immediately. His silence stretched, cold and deliberate.

When he finally spoke, his words were blunt. “Because you are not deserving of marrying the Evergreen’s daughter.”

The words landed like a slap, sharp and unyielding.

Lucian’s jaw clenched, but his expression didn’t falter. He stood straighter, his voice calm but edged with danger. “You think you can decide that for her?”

“I’m her father,” Darius said flatly. “I decide who is worthy of her hand.”

Lucian’s eyes darkened. “You might be her father, but you haven’t been in her life for the past twenty years, you don’t own her.”

“And is it my fault that I haven’t been in her life?” Darius fired back, glaring at him.

Luna rose from her seat, her tone gentle yet firm. “Please, both of you.” Her eyes moved to Lucian, soft with empathy. “This isn’t about worth, Lucian. It’s about a promise…..one that was made long before you came into
