The drawing room felt colder than it had moments ago after those words, the fire crackling faintly in the hearth, its glow casting long shadows on the walls.
The adults stood solemnly while the two children who looked tiny against the heavy wooden desk and towering shelves, looked on, unaware of how the next few minutes would shape the rest of their lives.
Xander Stormvale straightened his back, his tone solemn yet resolute. “This written agreement,” he began, voice carrying across the silent room, “will bind both our families. The Stormvale and Evergreen lineages will be joined through marriage, by our children. And when they come of age, they can only marry each other.”
He let that sink in for a moment before continuing, eyes flickering to Darius. “Once this merger is complete, our enemies will no longer be able to steal either the Stormvale or Evergreen empires. This bond will make both families untouchable.”
His gaze shifted toward the two small figures before him. Dahlia was blinking sleepily but still smiling, her little hands clasped together, while Lucius stood beside her, for a ten years old, his expression was calm and his posture straight, the perfect reflection of his father’s poise.
“Now,” Xander said, softening his tone, “Dahlia, my sweet girl, do you agree with this merger?”
The little girl’s face brightened instantly, her curls bouncing as she nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, Godfather!” She exclaimed, her voice ringing clear and bright in the heavy air.
A faint smile tugged at Xander’s lips. He reached down and softly patted her head. “That’s my girl.” he said warmly, the words carrying both affection and sadness.
He turned to his son next. “Lucius,” Xander said, his tone gentle but deliberate, “do you understand what this means?”
Lucius met his father’s gaze, his young eyes steady. “It means I’ll get married to Dahlia when we’re older.” He said quietly.
Xander nodded approvingly. “That’s right. But understand this… it’s a very serious merger, one done with blood. It cannot be broken. You both need to take it seriously.”
Both children nodded in unison, their small faces reflecting a mix of confusion and innocence, too young to truly grasp the gravity of what was being asked of them.
“Good,” Xander said softly. He turned to his desk, pulling open a drawer. The faint clatter of metal and paper filled the silence before he drew out a large, leather–bound file. Inside were sheets of parchment, documents covered in seals and heavy ink. He laid them flat on the desk with a measured breath. “These are the merger documents. Everything it entails is here.”

He looked back up at the two children. “Come forward, both of you.”

They obeyed immediately, their tiny feet padding softly on the marble floor until they stood before the desk. Then, Nander reached again into the drawer and pulled out a small silver needle. The faint gleam of it under the firelight made Dahlia stiffen.
Her eyes widened. “A needle?” She whispered, her little voice trembling.
Luna’s heart clenched, and she took an instinctive step forward, but Xander held up a gentle hand to stop her. Before Luna could say anything, Lucius leaned down slightly toward Dahlia and whispered in her ear, “It’s not going to hurt much. I’ll be right here. I’ll hold your hand.”
Dahlia blinked up at him, eyes wet but trusting. She nodded quickly and grabbed his hand tightly, her small fingers trembling inside his.
“That’s my brave girl,” Xander said softly, reaching for her tiny hand. He gave her a soft and reassuring smile, the kind only a man with a heavy heart could give and then he pricked her finger gently. The sharp sting came and went, but it was enough to make Dahlia whimper, a few tears rolling down her cheeks.
From where she stood in the corner, Luna’s body stiffened. Eva reached out and squeezed her friend’s hand tightly. “Don’t worry,” Eva whispered softly, her voice steady despite her own trembling lips. “She’s a strong girl. She’ll be fine.”
Luna nodded wordlessly, her eyes glistening.
Xander carefully caught a few drops of Dahlia’s blood, letting them fall into a small porcelain ink stamp. Then, he guided her thumb over to the paper. “Here,” he said gently. “Press your thumb where I show you.”
Dahlia did as told, her small thumb pressing over the glowing red mark. When she was done, Xander smiled faintly and pulled out a tiny Hello Kitty plaster, wrapping it gently around her thumb before placing a kiss on it. “There,” he whispered, “all done.”
Then he turned to Lucius. “Your turn, son.”
Lucius didn’t flinch when he saw the needle. His expression didn’t even change. But when Xander pricked his finger, he felt the sting all the same. It was a quick, burning flash, but he didn’t cry. He only winced, then straightened his shoulders again.
“Good boy.” Xander murmured proudly, repeating the same process as before. He caught Lucius’s blood, stamped the paper, and pressed the boy’s thumb into the corresponding place beside Dahlia’s.
Once both seals were set, he took the porcelain stamp, now filled with both children’s blood and pressed it firmly onto the document’s lower corner. The red mark glowed faintly against the golden wax seal. “And with this,” Xander said softly, almost reverently, “the bond is sealed. The Stormvale and Evergreen legacies will live
on.”
The room fell silent for a moment, the crackle of the fire the only sound.
Then Dahlia broke into a giggle, looking up at Lucius with bright eyes. “You can’t tell me not to call you my husband again.” She teased happily.
Lucius rolled his eyes but the corner of his lips twitched into the smallest of smiles. He didn’t say it aloud, but
