AUTHOR’S POV
TWENTY YEARS AGO.
Seconds turned into minutes.
Minutes bled into hours.
Yet, the commotion outside didn’t stop.

The faint hum of gunfire, the sharp cracks that echoed through the walls and the heavy boots thudding in the corridors all wove into one long nightmare. Inside the safety room, the silence between mother and son felt suffocating.
Eva’s eyes were glued to the door. Her fingers trembled violently as she clutched Lucius’s hand so tight it hurt, but he didn’t complain. He only stared at her pale face, at the way her lips moved soundlessly, whispering prayers beneath her breath.
“Please,” she whispered again and again, voice raw, “please let them be safe… let him be safe…”
Lucius said nothing. He could hear his mother’s heartbeat. It was loud, uneven and frantic. The rain outside beat against the hidden windows like an impatient drum.
He remembered his father’s last words “I’ll always come back for you.”
But as the hours stretched, that promise began to feel like a lie.
The silence shattered with a sudden noise, there was a crash somewhere close, then it was followed by hurried footsteps.
Lucius stiffened. “Mama…” he whispered, clutching her arm.
Eva’s breath hitched. Then she turned sharply toward him, her voice trembling but firm. “Lucius. Quiet now. Follow me.”
She stood, pulling him up. Her hand was cold as she dragged him toward the shelves lining the wall. Her eyes darted frantically over the rows of books. “It’s here,” she whispered. “It should be here…”
Lucius frowned, his heart hammering. “What are you doing?”
“There’s a lever,” she said breathlessly. “Your father said it leads outside the estate. We need to find it. Quickly.”
Her hands began moving as she touched and tugged at random books, searching for the one that would move the shelf. She was frantic, her movements jerky, desperate.
Outside, the noise grew louder. Voices this time.
Lucius froze as he heard a man’s voice, muffled but close.

“Are you sure it’s this wall?”
:
Another voice replied, it was deeper, confident. “Yes. I’m sure.”
Eva went still. Her head turned sharply toward the door, her face draining of color. That voice…

Lucius recognized it too. He knew that tone, that accent, it was one of their guards. One who had smiled at him in the garden just days ago.
A chill ran down his spine. He looked up at his mother. “Mama… that’s—”
“I know,” Eva whispered, her eyes wide with horror. “Oh, God… we have a mole within us.”
The first voice outside spoke again, louder this time. “If you can’t find the damn door, blow down the wall!”
Lucius’s blood turned to ice.
Movement followed, boots stomping and the sharp clatter of metal as they tried to break the wall. Then came the crack of gunfire, bullets thudding into the wall.
Eva gasped, jumping back. Her trembling hands collided with the shelves, knocking several books down with a loud thud.
The noise was deafening in the small space.
“Wait-!” someone outside shouted. “They’re in there! Bring down the wall!”
Eva’s legs gave out beneath her. She collapsed to the ground, clutching her head as tears spilled freely. “They found us,” she whispered, shaking uncontrollably. “Oh God… we’re going to die…”
Lucius knelt beside her, his little body shaking but his mind desperate to be strong, just like his father said. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders, pulling her into a hug. “Don’t say that, Mama,” he whispered, his voice small but steady. “We’re not going to die. I’ll protect you.”
Eva let out a broken sob, her fingers gripping his shirt. “You shouldn’t have to,” she whispered. “You’re just a boy.”
“But I will,” Lucius said again, firmer this time. “Dad told me to protect you.”
He forced himself to pull away and turned toward the shelves, scanning the rows of books, his heart pounding as the sound of crumbling plaster filled the air. The wall was coming down. Dust rained from the ceiling.
“Come on…” he muttered, running his small fingers across the spines of books. “Come on, where are you?”
Then he saw it, an odd–looking book, its cover slightly crooked compared to the rest. His instincts kicked in. He reached out, yanked it down-
And with a low click, the entire bookshelf shifted backward with a groan, revealing a dark tunnel yawning beyond.

But Eva didn’t move. She was still on the floor, rocking back and forth, her eyes unfocused. “We’re going to die,” she whispered over and over. “We’re going to die.”
The wall behind them cracked again, a large piece crumbling away. Through the opening. Lucius could see flashes of light and movement as men pushed debris aside, their guns drawn.
“Mom, please!” Lucius grabbed her hand, tugging with all his strength. “Get up! We have to go!”
But she wouldn’t move. She was trembling, lost in fear, her breath coming in quick gasps.
The hole in the wall widened and Lucius could now see their faces. The intruders. One of them, the traitor guard grinned when he spotted them.
“There!” He yelled.
Lucius’s heart nearly stopped.
Eva blinked rapidly, reality slamming back into her like a wave. She turned to her son, her lips trembling. “I have to go find your father.” She whispered.
Lucius shook his head violently. “No! We have to leave now! We can find him later….please, Mom, we have to go!”
But she was already standing, her decision made. “He’s out there, Lucius. He needs me.”
The men were almost through.
“Mom!” Lucius cried, voice breaking.
Eva turned to him, tears streaking her face. “I love you.” She whispered hoarsely. Then, with a sudden burst of strength, she pushed him toward the tunnel.
“Go!” she screamed. “Run, Lucius! Don’t look back!”
“Mom!”
Her trembling hands shoved him harder, and his small body stumbled through the dark opening.
The bookshelf began to close automatically the moment he crossed the threshold… heavy, mechanical and
slow.
Lucius spun around, reaching out desperately. “Mom!” he cried, his voice cracking. “Come with me! Please!”
But before she could take a step, rough hands grabbed her from behind. She screamed, struggling.
“Run!” she shouted one last time, her voice echoing through the tunnel. “Run and don’t look back!”
Lucius stood frozen, watching as the bookshelf sealed between them. The last thing he saw before the darkness swallowed her was the men grabbing his mother, her clothes tearing and the cruel laughter that
