As Alina descended the stairs, the sound of her heels tapping against the glass steps echoed softly, alerting Lucian, who was waiting at the base of the spiral staircase.

He looked up, and his eyes widened at the sight of her.

Alina, who had been watching him closely, didn’t miss his reaction. A wide smile spread across her face, her heart fluttering at the way his gaze lingered on her.

“You look stunning, babygirl.” Lucian complimented, his voice lower than usual as he extended his hand to help her the rest of the way.

“You don’t look bad yourself.” Alina replied, taking hold of his hand, her fingers curling gently around his.

Behind her, Gabri-el and Rafa-el were both exchanging sly looks, pride glimmering on their faces.

It wasn’t news that Lucian was a man who rarely showed emotion, but today, they had witnessed him completely stunned.

“Ace.” Lucian called.

“Yes, boss.” Ace responded, appearing from the corner.

His eyes widened in shock the moment he saw Alina, but he was quick to recover before Lucian could notice.

“Make sure you add a little something to their fees.” Lucian told him, his eyes never leaving Alina.

The two men squealed in delight. Lucian may not have said the words, but they knew he was more than satisfied with their work.

“Will do, boss.” Ace responded, pulling out a bank card and handing it over to them.

“Thank you so much, Mr. Blackwood.” Gabri-el and Rafa-el chorused.

“Enjoy your evening, Mrs. Blackwood.” Rafa-el added, shooting Alina a playful wink before the two men exited the mansion.

“Are you ready to go?” Lucian asked, his tone softer than usual.

“Yes.” She breathed out, her voice barely above a whisper.

The ride to the gala was quiet but the air was thick with unspoken tension.

Lucian kept stealing glances at her, his gaze lingering a little too long. And Alina noticed, every single one of them.

She was enjoying every second of attention she was getting from him.

Alina secretly hoped the night would go well. Because then… maybe, just maybe, she could finally have sex with Lucian.

Little did she know that the night would take a turn for the worse.

When the doors of the car were opened by the valet and they stepped out, the paparazzi froze for a second. Flashes that were previously going off for other guests halted.

All attention turned to Alina and Lucian.

Whispers began to ripple through the crowd as everyone wondered who Alina was.

They had never seen her with him before, and naturally, curiosity ensued.

Lucian didn’t care about the paparazzi. He knew those pictures would never see the light of day. He hated the spotlight, it was easier to get things done when no one was watching or poking around in your business.

“Wow, she looks so stunning.”

“Who is she?”

“She looks like she just walked out of a magazine cover.”

“I’ve never seen her before.”

“Oh my God! They look so good together.”

Alina had to smile at that one.

“Is she wearing Amy’s designs? They aren’t even out yet!”

The whispers continued to stir as they both made their way into the venue.

Seraphina, who had been having her picture taken by the paparazzi at the exact moment Alina arrived, was fuming. Her smile faltered, hands clenched by her sides, when she realized the attention had shifted away from her.

Even Adrian, who she had come with, was staring at Alina, his eyes wide, almost in disbelief. He was practically drooling.

Alina had always been in Seraphina’s shadow. She never dressed up. She never showed up to any large or small events. In fact, to the world, Seraphina was the only known child of the Dawn family.

But now… now the whole world was seeing her.

And Seraphina didn’t like it.

“I’m the one that is supposed to be standing by Lucian.” She muttered, bitterness dripping from every word. “I hate you so much, Alina.”

“Let’s go.” She elbowed Adrian, who was staring in a daze over how stunning Alina actually was.

He shook his head quickly, snapping out of his daze and clearing the stunned look off his face, and they both made their way into the venue.

The moment Alina and Lucian stepped into the venue, all attention turned to them again. Lucian didn’t fail to notice it, especially the way the men were looking at Alina.

They were eyeing her like a piece of meat they couldn’t wait to devour.

Lucian’s grip around her waist tightened instinctively.

“I’m going to have a hard time keeping these dogs away.” He muttered under his breath, annoyance simmering in his tone.

“Did you say something?” Alina looked up at him with a slight frown, her brows knitting together.

She hadn’t quite caught what he said.

“No.” Lucian replied stiffly, his jaw tightening, which only made her frown deepen in silent confusion.

Unknown to Lucian, Alina was also trying to rein in her jealousy as women around the room shamelessly drooled over him. Their lingering glances and subtle whispers stung more than she expected.

Was this how he gets a lot of attention all of those times she refused to go to events with him? She thought, her hand tightening around her clutch in jealousy.

Lucian led her over to the table lined with food and drinks and handed her a plate of cake.

“Eat.” He said, his voice firm but soft.
