Jerold's plan was flawless from the start. He had considered every possible scenario and devised solutions for each. But one thing he never anticipated was the betrayal of the mercenaries! Not only did they betray him, but they switched sides to Stefan!
It never crossed his mind that Stefan could have contacted these mercenaries and hired them for their second assignment. This revelation left Jerold both incredulous and convinced that fate itself was conspiring against him.
This time, he had truly lost. And not just lost, but lost utterly. It was likely that this single event would destroy all the efforts and hard work he had put in over the years.
If he had known it would come to this, he would never have cooperated with Arnold in this kidnapping scheme. After all, as long as his influence remained, the outcome of his rivalry with Stefan was still uncertain. But now, not only had he lost his position as heir and everything he had worked for, but he was also facing imprisonment! There was no doubt that Lambert and Stefan would seize this opportunity to hound him relentlessly—until he was no longer a threat.
He was utterly finished.
At this thought, Jerold's eyes reddened with deep regret and hatred.
Meanwhile, Arnold finally regained most of his senses. Upon coming to, he instinctively stepped forward and exclaimed, "Jerold! How could you do such a thing? You actually kidnapped my nephew?" As he spoke, Arnold desperately signaled to Jerold, seemingly begging him to take the fall for the entire incident, promising to repay him in the future.
However, since the people restraining Jerold were Lambert's men, Arnold dared not make his gestures too obvious.
Seeing Arnold so eager to shift the blame onto him and clear himself of suspicion, Jerold felt like he was about to vomit blood.
He understood Arnold's intentions all too well—
However, he was determined not to admit it, or at least not to take the fall alone. Having dealt with Arnold before, he knew exactly what kind of person he was. This time, he had helped Arnold, and while it seemed like Arnold might return the favor, he was certain that Arnold would eventually shift all the blame onto him to save himself.
But...
If he were to drag Arnold into this as well, it would mean one less competitor for Lambert. Wasn’t that indirectly helping Lambert? And helping Lambert was, in a way, aiding Stefan!
He absolutely refused to do anything that would benefit Stefan! Yet, the thought of taking the entire blame himself left him seething with resentment. After a long moment of internal struggle, he pressed his lips tightly together, silent, as if deep in thought.
Arnold was unaware of the turmoil raging within Jerold and assumed he had agreed to his proposal.
With that, the weight in his chest suddenly lifted.
He turned to glance at Lambert and said softly, "Third Brother, what do you think? Should we take Jerold to the police station? Honestly, this might all be a misunderstanding... But regardless, even if Jerold was manipulated, he still harmed someone from the Stone family. I can’t forgive him for that. However, Third Brother, you should consider the Morris family’s position. After all, Stefan is Jerold’s older brother. Even if their relationship isn’t the best, they’re still brothers. If you go too far, I’m afraid the Morris family might take issue with it."
