Lexi's face turned deathly pale.
Truth be told, though Lexi stubbornly believed Stefan still harbored feelings for her deep down, his actions over this prolonged period and those icy, unfamiliar glances he'd cast her way had planted a tiny seed of doubt in her heart. Perhaps Stefan truly no longer cared for her...
But this thought only lasted a split second.
Ninety-nine percent of the time, she remained convinced Stefan was simply throwing a tantrum with her.
Yet now, staring into Allison's venomous eyes, she felt her heart constrict with sudden dread.
Yes...
She didn't dare—didn't dare confront Stefan to ask. The memory of that final look he'd given her before leaving last time still terrified her to the core. She remembered all too clearly—right after his final warning, her father had met with disaster. That was precisely why she'd come to Allison this time instead of approaching Stefan directly.
Deep down, she couldn't help but feel a creeping fear toward Stefan.
...
Meanwhile, Angelo and his team had successfully secured a doctor.
An eccentric one at that.
Angelo had met this physician three years ago during a particularly dangerous job that left him gravely injured—this doctor had pulled him back from death's door.
The man was... unusual, to say the least.
But no matter. Angelo had him persuaded within four or five phone calls.
Mission accomplished, Angelo turned to Stefan with a cocky smirk curling his lips. "Tsk, still the best, aren't I?"
Stefan finally felt the weight lift off his shoulders. Ignoring Angelo's self-praise, he took a deep breath and sank into the sofa, his trembling hands slowly steadying as he tried to calm himself.
Angelo, receiving no response, pursed his lips. Given Stefan's current misfortune, he decided not to press the issue.
It was Lambert who cut through the tension with a practical question, glancing at both of them. "When do we leave?"
The question snapped Stefan back to attention. He immediately looked up, his gaze pleading toward Angelo with whom he had shared little warmth in their youth.
Angelo shrugged, unwrapping a lollipop and popping it into his mouth. "Hmm, tomorrow. You and your daughter should fly out then. He's currently in another country. I'll arrange for someone to meet you there, and you can focus on her treatment. But with a heart condition, it might take a while—you probably won't be back soon. Of course, you could make round trips, but given the circumstances, I’d bet you’ll be stuck there for a long stretch. So, better wrap up all your loose ends today. Otherwise, by the time you return, your daughter might be fine, but your job could be gone."
Stefan ignored Angelo’s smug grin and turned to Lambert instead. "Lambert, I’ll need you to keep an eye on the Morris family for me."
The Lamari Group held shares under Stefan and Allison, with Ariana as CEO. Given her competence, Stefan wasn’t worried about the company. As for the Morris family, as long as Jerold and his maternal relatives stayed quiet, things should remain stable. Still, a pang of regret gnawed at him.
If only he had completely eradicated Jerold’s remaining influence earlier.
Now, he had only managed to dismantle about half of it.
The other half might not pose an immediate threat, but one could never be too careful.
That’s why he needed Lambert’s watchful eye—not for heavy-handed intervention, just enough oversight to monitor the situation. If anything unexpected arose, Lambert could alert him, and he could return if necessary. It wasn’t that Stefan clung to power out of greed.
He simply couldn’t afford to let go.
