Irene was strikingly beautiful.
During high school and college, she had always been the student council president, while Lambert was the rebellious slacker who seemed to coast through school. Of course, his academic indifference was just a facade to deceive the Stone family. Irene, ever the kind-hearted soul, took it upon herself to tutor him, and naturally, the two became a couple.
Back then, Lambert’s position in the Stone family was precarious.
Any socialite with even a passing knowledge of their family affairs would steer clear of him.
Yet, Lambert had an undeniable allure—ruggedly handsome, exuding a cold, dangerous charm that set him apart from other boys his age. His presence was magnetic, making him stand out like a crane among chickens.
But his girlfriend, Irene, was simply too perfect—flawless in family background and every other aspect. Even those who secretly admired Lambert would feel utterly inadequate when compared to her. As for why they eventually broke up… it was because Irene, like Lambert, had been betrothed to someone else since childhood.
At the time, Lambert had declared that if Irene chose him, he would defy his family’s arrangements.
But Irene refused.
Her father was the head of a branch family—influential, yes, but still no match for the main lineage. If she reneged on the engagement, the consequences for her family would be severe. So she apologized, whispering that in another life, she would choose him.
But who was Lambert? His ruthlessness surpassed ordinary limits.
The moment Irene made her stance clear, he walked away without hesitation.
Their breakup was swift and decisive.
Another life?
If they couldn’t be together in this one, what was the point of the next? Besides, at the time, Lambert was deep in his wildest phase with Angelo. When he cut ties, he did so mercilessly. No matter how much he had once cared for Irene, the moment she gave up on him—for whatever reason—he refused to linger.
And so, as time passed, the name Irene faded from Lambert’s memory entirely.
Hearing Madelyn mention it out of the blue, Lambert found himself unexpectedly reminiscing about his high school days.
Madelyn glanced at Lambert before adding, "Irene got divorced."
Lambert finally lifted his gaze, his expression one of genuine surprise.
Seeing his sudden interest, Madelyn couldn’t help but feel a mix of smug satisfaction and quiet pity. So what if that Ariana had been so arrogant earlier? Clearly, Irene still held a place in Lambert’s heart. The thought only solidified when she recalled how Ariana’s features bore a faint resemblance to Irene’s.
But she had miscalculated one thing—Lambert wasn’t still hung up on Irene. He was simply baffled as to why Madelyn felt the need to tell him about Irene’s divorce.
Lambert was a man of ruthless detachment.
When he loved, he loved fiercely. But once that love faded, he moved on without a second thought. In his mind, Irene was already part of the past. They had broken up long ago.
Madelyn was about to press further when a familiar voice cut in from behind her. Ariana spoke coldly, "Lambert, I’m tired. I want to go back." Though her words were directed at Lambert, the icy tone seemed meant for Madelyn.
Lambert didn’t question it. He stepped closer, an uncharacteristic flicker of concern crossing his features.
