The wedding day of Fanny and Damon was fast approaching.
Lately, Fanny had been sighing more and more often, as if mourning the version of herself about to step into a living nightmare.
The Castro family was no longer what it used to be.
Naturally, their wedding would be an extravagant and dazzling affair—nothing short of a grand spectacle.
It was clear just how much the Castro Family valued the Fernandes Family’s daughter, which gave Fanny’s parents some small measure of relief.
At the moment, Ariana was at the Fernandes Family's residence.
Since the wedding was tomorrow, Ariana had arrived a day early. Traditionally, the bride’s mother would host a lavish feast the night before the wedding, and the bride herself would gather her closest friends to celebrate her last day of singlehood. While high-society marriages weren’t exactly the same, the customs weren’t far off.
Fanny sat restlessly on the small swing chair in her room, staring blankly out the window, unable to suppress her sighs.
The sound finally wore down Ariana’s patience as she sat reading on the sofa.
Snapping her book shut, she said, "You’re getting married tomorrow. What’s with all the sighing?"
Fanny pouted. "I don’t want to marry Damon."
Ariana’s brows furrowed.
She studied Fanny for a moment before replying sternly, "What’s done is done. Don’t ever say that again, understand?" This wasn’t some ordinary marriage—even if it were, free of any business entanglements, such words would still sting if her future husband ever heard them.
And this was the Castro family they were talking about—a heavyweight in their world.
Marriages among wealthy families were like palace intrigues from ancient times. Before the wedding, one might not feel it, but once married, she’d quickly learn what it meant to always be on guard.
Fortunately, Fanny was relatively lucky.
Damon had no other siblings except for Maxwell, his amiable younger brother, and an illegitimate half-sister. The rest of his father’s children had never been formally acknowledged, so there was nothing to worry about on that front.
As for her future mother-in-law, from what Ariana had heard, she seemed decent—a bit aloof, perhaps, but otherwise reasonable. All in all, Fanny’s arranged marriage was far less burdensome than most. As long as she didn’t make any social blunders, no one would have grounds to criticize her.
Fanny realized she had spoken carelessly. Covering her mouth with a playful flutter of her lashes, she put on an exaggerated pout. "I was just venting a little, that’s all."
Ariana shot her a pointed look. "You’re at home, so it’s fine—but don’t let me hear you say anything like that again."
"Alright, alright, I’ll remember!" Fanny said hastily.
Ariana studied her for a moment before shaking her head in exasperation. After keeping Fanny company a while longer, she checked the time and stood to take her leave.
The moment Ariana made a move to go, Fanny’s composure crumbled.
"You’re leaving already?" she whined. "Stay a bit longer, Ariana… I can’t sleep."
"Sleep or not, you’d better try," Ariana retorted dryly. "Unless you want all of the city’s high-society ladies to witness the first bride in history with dark circles under her eyes. That’d certainly make you unforgettable."
Fanny fell silent.
Having teased her enough, Ariana finally relented and stopped tormenting her.
After exchanging just a few words, she was ready to leave. Fanny followed Ariana to see her out.
Ariana felt a bit helpless but didn’t refuse the gesture.
Once inside the car, she instructed the driver to start the engine. Just as she was about to take off her coat, something felt off. She frowned slightly and only then noticed Lambert sitting in the driver’s seat, looking exasperated. He raised an eyebrow at her and said, "Come sit up front."
