Ariana knew she couldn't match Lambert's thick skin in arguments, so she simply gave up and fell silent.
She turned her head to gaze out the car window, her expression languid and indifferent.
What she didn't notice was the way Lambert kept stealing glances at her, his eyes brimming with tenderness and helplessness.
The car soon arrived at the Stone family estate.
Lambert drove through the gates and, as they neared their villa, handed the keys to a security guard, instructing him to park the car in the family lot.
By now, though it wasn't terribly late, the hour wasn't exactly early either—it was already ten o'clock.
Lambert had planned to head straight back to their villa with Ariana, eager to "discuss" a certain matter with his adorable wife. But the moment they stepped onto the estate grounds, the butler spotted them and hurried over, his face etched with urgency.
One look at the butler's expression told Ariana and Lambert that something was amiss.
They paused in their tracks.
The butler approached and said respectfully, "Sir, Madam, the family head has requested your presence. There's... a matter to discuss."
Lambert and Ariana exchanged a glance before he asked coolly, "What is it?"
The butler hesitated.
Protocol dictated he shouldn't disclose details, but considering Lambert's status as the future head of the Stone family, he wavered before speaking, though he chose his words carefully, treading lightly.
"It seems... there's been some trouble involving the First Master."
Lambert's expression froze.
He remained silent for three seconds before replying, "Understood."
Then, he led Ariana toward the main residence.
Ariana had no idea what had happened to the eldest branch of the family, but an inexplicable unease settled in her chest. Still, she tried to reassure herself—perhaps it wasn’t anything too serious.
Yet, considering the strained relationship between the eldest branch and their own, the third branch, she knew better than to let her guard down.
When Ariana and Lambert stepped into the grand living room of the main villa, they immediately spotted the members of the second branch, who had already arrived.
Second Uncle and his wife glanced briefly at them before turning away, maintaining their silence.
The moment the family patriarch saw Lambert, the frost in his eyes thawed slightly. He motioned for him to approach, and without defiance, Lambert walked over slowly with Ariana. Once he stood before the old man, he asked, "What happened?"
Ariana lingered a little farther away.
Though curious about the eldest branch’s situation, she had no intention of getting involved.
Her feelings toward them were simple—if they stayed out of her sight, fine. But if they crossed her path, she wouldn’t seek revenge outright, yet expecting her to be civil was out of the question. She would never forget the despair she felt when little Lucian was kidnapped.
She truly couldn’t forget—
For a mother, the one thing that must never be touched is her child.
Hearing his grandson’s question, the old man studied Lambert’s face before shifting his gaze to Ariana, whose expression remained indifferent. Then, he said, "Your uncle had a sudden accident. He was rushed to surgery and has just been brought back."
After listening, Lambert responded with a simple, "Hmm."
