I hadn’t expected him to answer. I just wanted him to stop my mom from blowing up at me.
So after he pulled her back to sit, I turned to Julian. “Well… now that I’ve said everything there is to say, can I go now? I don’t know about you, but I’m starving.”
He gave small nod.
I flashed him a grin and jumped to my feet. “Thanks, brother.”
I had barely taken a step forward when my mother’s voice rang out.
“Wait.”
I had to stop myself from groaning out loud. Honestly, her voice was starting to get a little irritating.
After a slow, calming breath, I turned with a tiny smile. “Yes, Mom?”
“I heard you didn’t sleep in your room after you returned last night. You stayed in the guest room instead. What’s that about?”
She just had to ask, didn’t she?
The I guess today was the day I finally get to say the words I’d held in for two lifetimes.
I sat back down. “Answer me honestly, Mom: when you designed that room, was it meant to

house a human or a doll?”

Her brows furrowed. “What kind of question is that? Are you questioning my taste?”
She didn’t get it.
Fine. Next question.

“Then tell me what’s with all the pink?”
The moment the words left my mouth, I noticed Marissa uncross her legs and lean forward slightly. Even Julian looked surprised.
It was like they didn’t expect me to bring it up.
But Mom still looked confused. “What do you mean?”
I sighed inwardly.
In her mind, she and Dad had provided me with the best of everything. A well–off life. Pretty clothes. Good food. There was nothing to complain about–at least, not in her
eyes.
With her, subtlety would never work.
“I hate pink.”
I made sure to stress the word ‘hate,‘ just in case she still missed the point.
“Yet my entire life–from birth till now–has been engulfed in it. My wardrobe. My accessories. My room–everything.”
Before I could continue, Mom cut in. “Isn’t pink your favorite color? How could you hate it?”

She sounded genuinely bewildered. And most importantly… disbelieving.
Beside her, my dad’s expression mirrored hers.
I paused, then gave a short, mirthless laugh.
“My…” I pointed to myself. “Favorite color is pink?”
“How exactly did you come to that conclusion?”
“I… you…” she stumbled over her words.
“You’re not about to claim I told you that personally, are you?” I said, my voice turning cold.
From the look on her face, that was exactly what she’d been thinking.
In the end, she mumbled weakly, “Don’t all girls like pink?”
As expected, when cornered, people tend to use general assumptions to justify their actions.
“Fine,” I said, leaning forward. “Let’s say I ‘did‘ like pink. Then as someone who runs a fashion brand, surely you understand how absurd and monotonous it is to limit a person’s entire world to a single color?”
“Or does personal expression not apply in your design philosophy?”
Her face stiffened. Clearly, she was well aware of what she had done.
“If you hated it that much, you could have told us,” my father said, his voice strained. “All these years, I thought you loved it. That’s why I never said anything.”

“There. You have your answer”
I turned back to my mother, my voice calm “Actually, I’m sure you’ve seed it beftre After all, I couldn’t flawlessly pretend every time.”
“But you chose to ignore it because of your own fantasies and regrets”
I gestured toward Julian and Marina, who were both watching me with complicated expressions.
“I know you feel regretful about missing out on raising them. But I’m not your do–over. This isn’t some dollhouse game.”
My voice rose unintentionally, but I could care less.
“I’m a human being. I have emotions. I have thoughts. I have preferences. But all of those were ignored. Buried beneath your obsession with making up for past regrets.”
“Why do I always have to be the one sacrificed? The one neglected? The one abandoned? Why?!”
They say it only takes one crack for a dam to break.
That’s exactly what happened to me.
