The taxi pulled up in front of a magnificent gate that looked more like the entrance to a luxury resort than a residential community.

Above it, a sleek metal sign read: THE HAVEN RESIDENCES.

I can only stop here, miss, the driver said, turning slightly. Taxis are not allowed to go any further.

I nodded in understanding. It’s okay.

I understand,I nodded.

After paying the fare, I stepped out, and the cab pulled away.

I approached the gate. As I neared, the glass window of the security booth slid open with a soft click, and a guard leaned out.

How can we help you, miss?he asked politely.

A flicker of nervousness stirred in me. Maybe it was the guard’s stern expressionor the simple fact that I’d never done something like this alone before.

II’m looking for Dean,I said, stumbling slightly over the first word but becoming more composed by the end.

Dean?the guard repeated, puzzled.

He turned to ask his colleague. You know any resident named Dean?

The second guard didn’t seem to recognize the name either. What’s his last name?

His last name? I hesitated.

Scott?

But would Dean keep the surname of a family he clearly despised?

Still, with no better option, I opened my mouth to answer, only for a sharp honk to cut through the air.

Excuse me,the guard said and disappeared inside.

A minute later, he returned, tone more deferential.

Are you, by chance, Lilith Caldwell?

Yes,I said with a small nod.

As we spoke, the gates slid open with a muted click, and a black sports car glided up beside me.

My apologies for the delay, the guard continued. Mr. Callahan already informed us to let you in when you ar- rived.

But we weren’t familiar with his first name, and also failed to confirm your identity first. That was our mistake.

It’s okay,I replied just as the driver’s side door opened, and Dean stepped out.

Wearing black slacks and a black shirt layered over a white tee, he looked effortlessly casual andhandsome, as ev-

Then I glanced down at my own outfit.

Why did it feel likewe were wearing matching outfits?

Our clothescolor palettes and dressing style were nearly identical.

Dean followed my gaze and arched a brow, clearly catching on.

Looks like our fashion sense is quite in sync.

In sync, my foot. I rolled my eyes.

I realized I’ve been doing that quite a lot in his presence.

Why are you here? Going somewhere?I asked, despite having a good guess.

What do you think?he said, then added without waiting for an answer, I came to pick you up.

Oh. So that was why he’d asked earlier if I’d be driving here myself.

I turned back to the guard and offered a polite smile. Thanks for your help.

Just doing our job,he replied, equally polite.

Dean had already rounded the car and opened the passenger door with a slight bow. Please step in, Princess.

Normally, I hated that word. But when he said itit didn’t sound so bad.

What a flirt,I muttered under my breath with my lips tugging upward against my will.

Once I was seated, he closed the door, got in on the other side, and we drove past the gates into the community.

Even before seeing the apartment, the scenery on the way was enough to make the decision I took earlier firmer.

The difference from the city was like night and day.

Gone was the honking chaos and mechanical hums.

In its place was silencesoft, soothing silence, broken only by the occasional chirp of birds and the whisper of the wind brushing through the trees overhead.

The road stretched ahead, paved with smooth, slatecolored cobblestones. A few golf carts passed by leisurely, their passengers either chatting or enjoying the breeze.

Trimmed hedges lined the sidewalks, while lavender and rose bushes spilled over the edges, painting the paths with color and perfuming the air with a subtle, floral scent.

I breathed in deeply, letting it all take over my senses.

Dean broke the silence.

What do you think of the place so far?

I turned to him, forcing my expression to remain neutral. Not bad.

He chuckled. Really? I thought this would be right up your alley. Guess your tastes are even pickier than you look.

Are you subtly shading me right now?

I would never,he said with mock innocence.

I gave him a sidelong glance, then returned my gaze to the scenery outside the window.

When we finally pulled up in front of a charming garden villa, I stared for a beat.

This is what you calledan apartment?I asked, turning to him.

Did he make a mistake, or had my past life completely messed up my memory of what the word meant?

I should’ve guessed something was off. We hadn’t passed a single highrise building since entering. Everything here were villas, mansions or something inbetween.

Dean simply shrugged. Any place you live in is technically an apartment.

As if I’d fall for that.

Still

I turned back to look at the building. With its courtyard and peaceful atmosphere, it feltperfect.
