Chapter 160
“Ms. Johnson, thank you so much! I had lost all hope. The hospital had given me a death sentence, but now I have a chance to live. You’re
incredible!”
Emily had just started her clinic hours when the first patient arrived.
The man had sunken cheeks and was extremely thin, clearly at death’s door. His spirit was weak, showing he was gravely ill.
Most doctors would have just shaken their heads and sent him away upon seeing his condition.
It was known that Floyd was offering free consultations today. The patient, whose family had run out of money for treatment, was brought here by his relatives, barely hoping for pain relief before his final moments.
Seeing that Emily was a young woman; the patient didn’t believe Floyd’s words that her medical skills surpassed his own, and had already resigned to despair.
But when Emily applied her acupuncture needles, the patient immediately felt a difference. His weak breath and lifeless body seemed to be reinvigorated, a sensation he hadn’t felt since falling ill.
Emily then prescribed medication, taking into account the patient’s financial situation. She used the most affordable yet effective medicines.
“Don’t worry about the cost; it won’t be expensive. And there’s no need to thank me. I’m a doctor; treating and saving people is my duty.”
Emily’s expression was calm.
The patient’s family took the prescription, and upon seeing only four listed medicines with prices, they were moved to tears.
Emily remained composed and called for the next patient.
The waiting patients, initially skeptical about Emily’s youth, now had their doubts dispelled and waited for their turn.
One patient after another.
And the line kept growing.
Word seemed to spread about the successful treatments, drawing even more people to the free clinic.
James arrived at the end of the line, surprised by the crowd.
Were they all here for the free service?
James frowned and instructed his bodyguard.
Soon, the bodyguard went to the front of the line.
“No way, no way…”
Suddenly, a rough voice from the back of the crowd rejected the bodyguard’s proposition.
Emily had just finished treating a patient and glanced over at the commotion.
Floyd immediately understood her look. “You continue treating patients; I’ll check it out.”
When Floyd arrived, the man who had spoken was still arguing with the bodyguard.
“I said no! I don’t need money. Everyone here is desperate for treatment. Finally, there’s a chance to get better; how could I give that up?”
The man was tall and burly, speaking with firm resolve.
The bodyguard had tried to pay him to either leave or move to the back of the line so James could see Emily sooner.
But the man, Aiden, didn’t care for money and refused to budge.
If it were just one person, it might not have been a big deal. However, his refusal drew the attention of Floyd and Emily.
James’s face darkened. He hadn’t seen Floyd yet, but his stern demeanor commanded authority. “Sir, I’m only asking you to move back, not to forfeit treatment. If you truly had money, you wouldn’t be here for a free consultation. Now, I’m offering you money kindly. If you don’t cooperate, someone will ensure you do.”
James spoke with the arrogance of someone used to getting his way.
The defiant patient sized James up and retorted, “You have an illness too, yet you don’t know to accumulate good karma. Think a bit of money lets you threaten people? The hospital said I’m beyond saving, so don’t mess with me. I fear nothing now!”
James felt embarrassed under the stares of the crowd. He was about to order his bodyguard to forcibly remove Aiden when Floyd stepped
“If you’re here for treatment, follow the rules. Even if you buy your way to the front, you might not get seen today.”
Floyd recognized James from a previous encounter, where he had tried to impersonate Emily with a woman and another man. Floyd already had a poor impression of James, and this scene only worsened it.
“Mr. Ryan, I apologize. I’m just feeling unwell and wanted to see Emily quickly. I negotiated with others to swap places willingly. I believe money can solve small problems, and my time is precious. Please, don’t mention this to Emily.”
James’s attitude shifted, showing respect to Floyd and even explaining himself patiently, ending with a humble plea.
Seeing James’s sincere apology and considering he was a patient, Floyd decided not to make a big issue of it.
But remembering the tension between Emily and James, Floyd’s eyes flashed with a hint of intrigue.
He glanced at James’s pale face and said, “You seem to have caught a cold. It shouldn’t be serious. Since you’re in a hurry, I’ll make an exception and prescribe you some medicine now.”
James refused, “No, I’ll wait.”
He decided to wait rather than risk worsening Emily’s impression of him.
“Alright then, wait like everyone else. We’re all here for treatment, so let’s be considerate.”
