Chapter 9: Coiled like a serpent

In a lavish mansion, a man paced in the living room. His face was filled with rage and his movements were impatient, ''That bitch!"

At this moment, there were sounds of urgent footsteps from the outside.

When Max turned around, he was greeted by the sight of a beautiful face.

Esther looked at him with tear-filled eyes, ''Brother-in-law, why do you seem so upset? Was it sister again?"

''Esther, don't call me brother-in-law again. That sister of yours doesn't know what is good for her,'' Max scoffed.

''She had been crying for days when she realized that you were getting engaged. On the night of your engagement, she wanted to come even if it meant seeing you from afar...''

''Don't even mention it! Even though it was my engagement night, I had made arrangements for her to be shifted to a flat in the suburbs. I cannot marry her legally but she could have been my mistress in name. With her current appearance, even though I would not touch her, she was not having any losing deal at all!"

Esther lowered her eyes, hiding the evil smile that crept on her face. Sister, sister, the good old lover of yours is despising you for being a pig! If you were here, would you take your life in disappointment?

"But what did she do...? That immoral loose woman parted her legs for Adrian King! She has the audacity to claim that she loves me,'' Max scoffed, ''Still, I went there when you told me he forced himself on her. But she humiliated me over and over again, praising that ruthless animal on my face.''

The expressions on Esther's face subtly shifted, ''Sister... praised Mr. King?"

''She...'' Just thinking of those praises that shot up to seventh heavens, Max's face altered between blue to green. He could not bring himself to speak of it, ''Forget it! I pity her again and again, Esther but everytime, she only lets me down. Does she think she is still in her past glory and I cannot live without a woman like her? What I am doing right now is merely an act of kindness on my part and if she doesn't want to live with it, she might as well die. Why should I care...?"

"Even though you are harsh with your words, but only you treat my sister the best,'' Esther smiled gently.

Max looked at her with a frown.

''And no matter what happens, she would always come back to you.''

Even as she said so, her thoughts were in a disarray. Why did Ella suddenly praise Adrian? And she even shunned Max, her first and only love? This has never happened before! How could everything change in one night?

"What do you mean by that?" Max's eyes narrowed as he looked at Esther.

Previously, he did not care what Ella did and whether she came to him or not. She was just a charity case to him but after being humiliated by her yesterday, he wanted to see her crawling to him with tears in her eyes.

''Sister is no longer a model. After that scandal years ago, she couldn't make a comeback and she was taken away by Mr. King. She had been wanting to make an academic comeback but don't you know...?"
