Lin Zhiyi was momentarily unable to react.
Seeing the woman about to pounce, a figure swiftly stepped forward and directly grabbed the woman’s hand.
Lin Zhiyi snapped back to her senses and saw who it was.
It was Gong Chen.
Gong Chen looked down at the woman and warned, "We will also hold your husband accountable for the losses caused by his disregard of safety regulations."
"What? My husband is already dead, and you still won’t let him go? You’re inhuman! Heaven’s curse! It’s so unfair!"
The woman looked around and deliberately wailed loudly.
Lin Zhiyi sternly retorted, "We deeply sympathize with your husband’s situation, but in this world, being weak doesn’t make you right."
The woman glared at Lin Zhiyi and pointed at her and Gong Chen.
"I get it, you two are covering for each other!"
"You rich people love doing that!"
"I now suspect my husband didn’t fall from the scaffold by himself, maybe you violated the rules and are trying to shirk responsibility! So you accuse my husband of not taking safety measures."
Immediately, the people around looked at Lin Zhiyi and Gong Chen with reproach.
Some people had already recognized Gong Chen.
Lin Zhiyi, worried about implicating Gong Chen, reached out and tugged at Gong Chen.
"You go first, I’ll handle it myself."
Gong Chen turned to look at her, "I said that no matter what happens, I’ll stay with you."
Lin Zhiyi felt a squeeze in her palm, tightly held by him.
He protectively drew her closer under his arm.
Lin Zhiyi’s heart warmed, knowing that Gong Chen was no longer the man who tried to keep her hidden.
Since that was the case, why should she hide behind him?
Lin Zhiyi took a step forward and patted Gong Chen’s hand, indicating that she could handle it.
Then, she looked the woman straight in the eye and raised her voice.
"If you think we’re covering for each other, then let the police determine the truth; I’ve already called them on the way here."
The woman’s eyes widened, "You, you called the police?"
"Is there a problem?" Lin Zhiyi closely watched the woman’s expression.
This woman was strange.
Her husband died under unclear circumstances, and even if she was too upset and forgot to call the police.
Hearing someone else call the police shouldn’t have prompted this reaction.
The woman was momentarily stunned, hastily using her crying to cover up.
"Who knows if you have connections with the authorities."
Lin Zhiyi approached the woman, sensing she was somewhat guilty.
She turned her gaze to the crowd.
"I believe everyone here has their own judgment. From the beginning, my friend and I have been comforting her and actively trying to solve the problem, but she hasn’t wanted to address it."
"First, she claimed we forced her husband to work overtime, then she said we were covering for each other, and now that I’ve called the police, she thinks it’s a cover-up."
"She trusts no one and won’t solve the problem. Should her husband’s death remain unclear because of this?"
"Why don’t you all help me think of a solution?"
After speaking, Lin Zhiyi suddenly approached the man who attempted to secretly take pictures of her before.
"Hey, big guy, what do you think?"
The man was startled, quickly backed away, and almost fell.
"I, I don’t know anything, who knows what this woman is up to?"
Lin Zhiyi then turned to the gossiping woman earlier, politely asking, "Madam, you seem to understand situations well; how about you suggest a way for me to convince this lady that I’m willing to solve the problem?"
The woman hesitated, pinching her nose, "What do I know? All she does is cry, cry, cry, her man’s practically been cried to death by her."
These words left the woman in shock.
She deliberately caused a scene to hold the moral high ground.
Now, the people she called on were saying she cried her husband to death.
This wasn’t how things were supposed to go.
