After they finished speaking, Lauren gave a quiet, inward laugh, her gaze fixed on Anastasia.
“Do you understand now, Anastasia?” Lauren’s tone was cool and commanding. “It’s not that St. Gabriel’s Medical Academy can’t tolerate you—it’s that the world outside won’t. For the sake of St. Gabriel’s hard-earned reputation, we can’t keep you here.”
“This is a name that’s taken decades to build. We won’t let anyone tarnish it.”
Her words sounded noble, but a glint of malice flashed in her eyes.
So what if Anastasia was talented? Today, Lauren would see her thrown out of St. Gabriel’s, never to have another chance to shine.
How could Anastasia ever compete with her after this? How could she prove herself to the Brennan family again?
And best of all, Lauren’s reasoning was airtight. To the outside world, this would seem like perfect justice, a fair decision by the Academy. No one would suspect she, the adopted daughter, was targeting the biological one.
As soon as Lauren finished, Mr. Evert gave a smug little laugh. “Well, what does everyone else think?”
The others immediately jumped in, their voices ringing with outrage. “Someone like her shouldn’t stay at St. Gabriel’s another minute!”
Lauren smiled faintly. “Anastasia, you heard the consensus.”
She curled her lips, and in that brief moment when their eyes met, her triumph and malice nearly overflowed.
But Anastasia remained perfectly calm. She let out a dry laugh. “So, without a shred of evidence—just a few rumors—you’re accusing me of cheating and kicking me out? Is that how St. Gabriel’s operates? Even an ordinary school would need real proof before punishing a student.”
