“Oh no!” Queenie cried out, her voice laced with an exaggerated panic and feigned innocence.
A stream of amber liquid arced through the air, heading straight for the flowing, starlit skirt of Gwyneth’s dress.
A chorus of hushed gasps rippled through the crowd.
Gwyneth’s eyes flashed cold.
She reacted instantly, body twisting back, but it happened so quickly—and at such close range—that the angle of the spill left her with nowhere to escape.
In that split second—
A hand, its long fingers adorned with an understated luxury watch, seemed to appear out of nowhere, snapping up in front of Gwyneth to shield her.
Crash!
The champagne flute shattered against that outstretched hand, sending icy alcohol and shards of glass in all directions.
The man didn’t so much as flinch, letting the chilled liquid soak the cuff of his expensive suit.
For a moment, time froze.
Gwyneth stared in shock. Her eyes landed on Bennett—his sharply chiseled features now shadowed with an icy fury.
She hadn’t even noticed when he’d moved to her side, but there he stood: a silent guardian, holding her firmly behind him.
His piercing gaze was a storm, cold enough to freeze the soul. He fixed Queenie with a look so sharp, it stripped away her mask of panic and laid bare the triumphant glint lurking in her eyes.
Queenie’s heart raced. Bennett’s stare was merciless, like a spotlight exposing every ugly thought she’d tried to hide.
Then Bennett’s eyes flicked to Gwyneth. The storm there eased, replaced by a depth of concern, protective and searching.
His voice was low, tight with a tension he barely let show, but the words rang out clearly:
“Are you alright?”
Gwyneth was still reeling from the near disaster—and from the shock of Bennett’s sudden appearance. She shook her head without thinking.
Her gaze dropped to his sleeve, wet with champagne and streaked with blood where the glass had cut him. A knot of emotion tightened in her chest; she opened her mouth, wanting to say something.
“Ben?!”
A voice rang out, thunderous with disbelief—so loud it almost hurt Gwyneth’s ears.
It was Julian.
He stared at Bennett, clearly stunned.
Dad said he wasn’t coming tonight. So why was he here, and why had he just stepped in for Gwyneth? Was this Hugo’s doing again?
Hugo, watching the drama unfold, looked thoroughly entertained, which only confirmed Julian’s suspicions.
