Revenge Wears My Ring novel Chapter 15

Julian studied Bennett across the desk. Beneath those brows, Bennett’s eyes were as cold and unfathomable as a midnight lake. Julian could never quite read what was hidden within them.

All these years, even though his brother hadn’t returned home, they’d always kept in touch. But this was the first time Bennett had ever seriously requested someone from him.

Julian actually found Gwyneth tiresome, but he couldn’t deny her skill. She was practically the backbone of the company’s operations at the moment.

He instinctively blurted out a refusal. “She’s just an unimportant secretary. You have plenty of talented people around you, don’t you?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, he noticed the way Bennett’s long fingers drummed against the tailored fabric of his charcoal slacks, the muted sound betraying his irritation. The atmosphere in the office instantly cooled, plunging into a heavy silence.

“What’s this? She’s too critical to lose, yet too insignificant to give up? Maybe you’d like to come be my secretary instead?” Bennett’s eyes were pools of ice, daring anyone to disagree.

No one in the executive suite dared look directly at this man. He radiated the chill of hell itself.

Julian’s throat tightened. After a moment’s thought, he realized Gwyneth was completely obedient to him now. Maybe it was better to go along with Bennett’s request—let Gwyneth work for his brother, and she might be even more useful to him in the future.

Julian managed a smile. “Don’t be ridiculous, Bennett. She’s just a secretary. Once she wraps up her current project, I’ll have her report to you.”

Queenie, listening nearby, felt much better after hearing Julian dismiss Gwyneth so casually. The embarrassment from earlier faded away. No matter how capable Gwyneth might be, it was clear Julian only had eyes for her now.

“Mr. Boyd, Julian didn’t mean anything by it,” Queenie chimed in, her voice soft and sweet, though her eyes glinted with satisfaction and calculation—something Bennett didn’t miss.

“He’s just worried Gwyneth might not be up to the task. Her last project wasn’t exactly a success, and her reputation hasn’t recovered.”

Bennett pressed his fingers to his temple, the cold gleam of his watch catching the light. He looked at Queenie, his gaze utterly devoid of warmth—in fact, it was tinged with open disdain. “Did I ask for your opinion?”

He glanced at his watch, then said quietly, “I have another meeting. Don’t forget what you promised.”

“I won’t.”

As Bennett left, Queenie watched his retreating back, still feeling the oppressive weight of his presence pressing down on her. Her heart was racing. This was her chance, and she had to seize it.

Being with Julian wasn’t enough to keep Gwyneth beneath her heel. Only by becoming Bennett’s wife—outranking even Julian—could she finally shed her “kept woman” status for good.

Bennett’s coldness towards her just now had to be because Julian was in the room. She convinced herself of that, then turned to Julian. “I left my flash drive in the car. I’ll go grab it.”

Julian didn’t think twice. “Go on.”
