Revenge Wears My Ring novel Chapter 178

“What are you talking about? You mean...?”

Julian leaned in, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper, as if he were letting her in on a secret.

“I’m talking about keeping an eye on my dear ‘big brother’ for me.”

A flash of venom crossed his eyes, quickly replaced by a soothing smile.

“You didn’t know what was really going on at Cloudview Resort today, so I don’t blame you. After all, you just started working for him. A man as paranoid as he is would never trust you right away.”

He paused, his tone shifting, now coaxing yet edged with command.

“But from now on, I need to know everything he does. Who he meets, what he says, any plans he’s making—especially if it concerns the Locke family, or me. You have to tell me the moment you find anything out.”

As he spoke, he reached out, once again taking Gwyneth’s hand from the table, as if that could make his plea more convincing.

Gwyneth felt a wave of disgust rise in her chest, but managed to keep her expression neutral. She lifted her hand under the pretense of reaching for the silver fork beside her plate, deftly slipping out of his grasp.

She picked up the fork, but didn’t touch her food; instead, she absentmindedly twirled it between her fingers, her brows knitting together, her face clouded with growing reluctance.

“But...”

Her voice carried just the right note of hesitation, tinged with a subtle distance that was easy to miss.

“He’s always on guard around me. He never lets me near anything important. I doubt I’ll ever get close to what you want.”

Julian, noticing she hadn’t outright refused, felt a surge of triumph. He immediately put on his most earnest, loving expression, leaning close again.

“Gwyneth, I know it’s not easy. But I believe in you. You know me better than anyone, and you’re the only one I can truly trust. I know you can help me, right? For our future...”

Gwyneth’s stomach turned at his nauseating words. She nearly lost control of her expression.

She abruptly lowered her head, using the act of serving herself to hide the cold, murderous glint in her eyes.

When she looked up again, she stared at the plate of cold vegetables she disliked just as much, hesitating as if waging an internal war. At last, as if she’d made a difficult decision, she lifted her gaze to meet Julian’s expectant eyes, her voice colored by the faintest hint of reluctant compromise.

“Alright.”

As soon as the word left her lips, Julian’s face broke into an ecstatic grin, as if he could already see Bennett’s downfall within reach.

He never noticed the flicker of contempt in Gwyneth’s eyes, as if she were watching some ridiculous little clown.

While Julian basked in the thrill of having turned her, Gwyneth fought back her revulsion, reaching for the glass of grape juice she loathed, determined to take a token sip and finally end this ordeal.

She sipped, set the glass down, and stood, her voice returning to the same gentle tone as before.

“If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going now.”

Julian was too absorbed in his own schemes to notice her coldness. He hurried to say, “Gwyneth, I won’t walk you out—it’s late. Keep in touch. Remember what we agreed.”

Gwyneth said nothing more. Her heart was already hard as stone.
