Revenge Wears My Ring novel Chapter 200

She strode over with the easy familiarity of an old friend, reaching out as if to link arms with Gwyneth—but Gwyneth stepped smoothly aside, her cool composure never wavering.

“Gwyneth! It’s been ages! I missed you so much while I was living abroad!” Serena’s smile was dazzling, not a trace of awkwardness in her voice, but beneath the surface, her eyes glinted with curiosity and calculation, like the dark currents hidden below a calm sea.

Gwyneth matched her with a polite, distant smile—the kind reserved for acquaintances at cocktail parties. “Yes, Serena. Welcome back.”

Her gaze lingered on Serena’s perfectly made-up face, waiting to see what she’d say next.

Serena blinked her expertly lined eyes and leaned in, feigning innocent curiosity. She lowered her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, as if about to share a secret.

“By the way, Gwyneth—I heard you used to work at Locke Group? As… Bennett’s assistant?”

She lingered on the word “assistant,” letting it hang in the air with a pointed emphasis, eyes sparkling with open, unfiltered scrutiny.

Bennett? She’s calling him by his first name? Just how close are they?

A chill ran through Gwyneth, but she kept her expression perfectly calm. “That’s right,” she replied evenly.

Let’s see what game you’re playing, Serena.

Serena’s smile brightened, a flash of pride and something almost triumphant in her expression.

She drew out her reply with an exaggerated, theatrical lilt, her accent suddenly affected and foreign: “Ohhh—reallyyyy?”

The word twined through the air, syrupy and insincere, loaded with all sorts of unspoken implications.

Gwyneth’s brow tightened. She cut straight to the point. “Is there something you want to say?”

Serena seemed to have been waiting for the question. She leaned in, a cloud of sugary perfume wafting over as she adopted a look of wide-eyed innocence. Her tone was light, almost breezy.

“Oh, nothing at all! It’s just… Well, now that I’m back, I realized it’s been ages since I’ve seen Bennett, too. I’ve arranged to have dinner with him tonight, just to catch up. It’s at that fancy new revolving restaurant, you know, with the best seats in the house.”

She paused deliberately, her smoky eyes locking on Gwyneth, challenge and anticipation flickering in her gaze. Then, with agonizing slowness, she added, “Gwyneth, would you like to join us?”

Boom.

For a split second, Gwyneth’s mind went blank.

They know each other? Well enough to meet up as soon as Serena’s back in town? And dinner—just the two of them? At the most romantic, high-end restaurant in the city?
