Revenge Wears My Ring novel Chapter 207

To the colleagues still lingering by the office doors, eager for gossip, the scene unfolding outside took on a life of its own.

“Wow, even a billionaire CEO comes to pick up his wife after work. Not like my husband, that’s for sure!”

“I know, right? Talk about a fairy-tale romance—Mr. Boyd picking up his beautiful wife at the office.”

“But why didn’t they just drive off in the same car?” someone asked, slow on the uptake.

A coworker nearby immediately jumped in, adopting the tone of an expert explaining things to a child. “Come on, seriously? They’re old money—Serena’s car isn’t exactly cheap either, you know. Of course they each drove their own cars. What, she’s supposed to just leave her car in the company lot overnight? Maybe they planned to meet up somewhere else.”

“Ohh, got it now!”

The crowd nodded, faces lighting up with a mix of envy and sudden understanding.

Meanwhile, Gwyneth had just reached the main doors. Her steps faltered, so slightly it would have gone unnoticed, but she recovered almost instantly. Expressionless, as though she hadn’t heard a word, she strode off in the opposite direction from the two luxury cars that had become the center of attention.

Her tall, elegant silhouette moved with cool precision, betraying no hint of unease. A few coworkers—some friends, some only vaguely acquainted—spotted her and quickly hid their excitement, switching to expressions of polite reserve. They greeted her in low voices as she passed.

“Good evening, Ms. Fletcher.”

“Heading home, Ms. Fletcher?”

Gwyneth offered only the briefest of nods, her gaze fixed straight ahead, barely acknowledging them. It was enough to count as a response.

She seemed surrounded by an invisible shield, keeping the noise and speculation at bay, making her unapproachable, almost untouchable.

Only when she’d disappeared around the far corner of the parking lot did the hushed crowd come alive again, voices rising as they regrouped. This time, their attention shifted seamlessly to the woman who had just left.

“Honestly, compared to Serena, I kind of feel sorry for Ms. Fletcher,” one woman murmured, sympathy and something more complicated flickering in her tone.

The sentiment caught on quickly.

“Totally! Mr. Boyd comes to pick up Serena himself, but has anyone ever seen Ms. Fletcher’s fiancé, Mr. Locke, show up for her? Not once.”

“Not even a casual date, right? It’s like there’s no trace of them ever being spotted together out in public. Super low-key—almost suspiciously so.”

“Exactly! Serena and Mr. Boyd are always getting photographed. Ms. Fletcher and her fiancé... they act more like business partners than a couple in love. No chemistry at all.”

“Yeah, so what if she’s smart and comes from a good family? If her relationship’s a mess, what’s the point? She’s always so cold—maybe that’s why men don’t go for her. Someone sweet and charming like Serena is way easier to love.”

Just as this cheap sympathy and speculation was about to spiral further, a slightly more grounded colleague snorted and cut them off.

“Oh please. We’re all here making peanuts, worrying about whether Ms. Fletcher is ‘pitiful’ or not? Maybe worry about your own credit card bills first, or if you’ve paid next month’s rent.”

“Exactly! Even if Ms. Fletcher is ‘pitiful,’ the car she drives is out of our league, and her apartment’s bathroom probably costs more than all of our places put together. If she dropped a dime, it’d feed us for a year. Wake up, people—maybe focus on making a bit more money of your own.”
