A sudden, inexplicable worry seized her heart.
She didn’t hesitate for a second. Her voice rang out, clear and urgent, leaving no room for argument:
“Where are you? Send me the address. I’ll be there right away.”
————————
The neon sign for the Maze Bar glowed with a lazy, sultry blue-violet light against the night.
Gwyneth barely bothered to park properly, squeezing her car right up to the entrance without caring if it was a tow zone. She flung the door open and hurried inside.
The bar was dimly lit, thick with the mingled scents of liquor, perfume, and tobacco. Heavy bass thudded in her ears.
Her eyes darted urgently over the booths and the bar, searching for that familiar figure.
“Gwyneth! Over here!” A slightly anxious voice called from a corner.
She spun toward the sound to see Mikael standing up, waving her over.
On the sofa beside him, Bennett was slouched back, head tilted, eyes closed, brow furrowed as if he was in pain.
The table in front of him was littered with empty bottles and glasses.
Gwyneth’s heart clenched. She rushed over.
“What happened?”
She turned to Mikael, her own anxiety leaking into her voice before she could stop it.
“Why did he drink so much?”
Mikael looked awkward and a little helpless, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Well… I’m not really sure. Bennett seemed off tonight. He just started drinking and wouldn’t stop. I tried to talk him down, but—” He hesitated, eyes flickering as if he knew more than he wanted to admit.
“Maybe… you should wait until Bennett sobers up and ask him yourself.”
Just then, as if he’d heard her voice, Bennett managed to crack open his eyes.
His gaze was unfocused, stripped of its usual sharpness. It took a moment before he could finally bring Gwyneth’s face into focus.
He seemed to recognize her, and the tension in his jaw eased a little. To her surprise, he gave her a dazed, almost childishly dependent smile, his voice hoarse and thick from the alcohol:
“Hey… sweetheart… you’re here…”
The word “sweetheart” hit Gwyneth like a jolt of electricity.
Instantly, her cheeks flushed hot, her heart skipping a beat.
