Revenge Wears My Ring novel Chapter 28

Gwyneth perched on Bennett’s lap, completely unaware of the commotion happening behind her. That familiar cedar scent enveloped her, making her heart pound faster with every breath.

Her only hope was that Bennett would give her a discreet signal so she could climb off him. But Bennett seemed to have forgotten she was even there. Instead, he casually speared a piece of steak with his fork and brought it to her lips. “Eat something. Sitting perfectly still like this is only going to make people suspicious.”

She realized he had a point and was just about to take a bite when Hugo strode over and stopped beside Bennett, lowering his voice, “Sir, I think someone took photos. Do you want me to handle it?”

Gwyneth turned at his words, just in time to spot the distant taillights of Julian’s car as it drove away.

Relieved, she quickly rose and slipped back into her own seat. She tried to sound casual as she asked, “Sorry, was I heavy? I hope I didn’t crush you back there.”

“Not at all.” Bennett’s gaze turned icy as it landed on Hugo, who felt a chill run down his spine.

Great, did I just ruin the boss’s moment?

The light from the crystal chandelier glinted off the pink diamond on Gwyneth’s finger, throwing sharp flashes across the table. She absently touched the stone, her heart still racing.

Suddenly, as if struck by a thought, she fished a document out of her purse and handed it to Bennett. “By the way, I drafted an agreement. Take a look.”

Bennett’s eyes darkened as he read the bold title on the cover.

The air between them thickened, growing tense.

His long fingers flipped through the pages, and with each turn, his eyes grew colder.

By the time he reached the last page, the temperature in the restaurant seemed to plummet.

“Two years of marriage, then we automatically part ways?” he scoffed, tossing the contract onto the table. “Assets divided, private lives off-limits?”

Gwyneth’s nails dug into her palm, the diamond leaving a mark in her skin. “That’s right…”

“And what if I say no?” Bennett suddenly stood, his tall figure looming over her.

He braced one hand on the back of her chair, the other catching her chin to force her eyes up to his.

“You really think this ring,” he murmured, tracing the pink diamond on her finger, “can be undone by some piece of paper?”

Almost instantly, the room spun. Her legs gave out, her body melting as if her bones had turned to water.

Instead of hitting the floor, strong arms caught her, gathering her up into a steady embrace.

The cedar and whiskey scent swirling around Bennett seemed to make her even dizzier.

“Gwyneth?” Bennett’s voice floated down from above, edged with uncharacteristic concern. “Do you have any idea how much you can handle?”

She tried to lift her head, but her neck felt boneless. All she could do was shift her eyes, and suddenly there were two Bennetts in her vision—both handsome, both wearing very different expressions. One frowned, the other’s lips pressed in a thin line.

“Bennett…” She reached out, trying to poke one of the faces, but her finger found only air. “Why are you so blurry?”

Bennett’s expression grew complicated. He slipped one arm under her knees and the other around her back, easily lifting her into his arms.

The sudden weightlessness made Gwyneth instinctively clutch at his neck, her cheek pressed against his chest.

“Stop squirming,” Bennett whispered, his voice rough and low, laced with barely restrained emotion.
