Yale froze, his face a portrait of shock and disbelief.
Had hell just frozen over?
Bennett actually agreed this easily?
No excuses, no attempts to get out of it?
Something about this felt… off.
Just then, Julian walked in from the hallway, catching Bennett’s calm statement—“She’ll be here tonight.” Immediately, Julian flashed a grin that was all too eager, its warmth a little too forced.
“Well, would you look at that! Didn’t expect this in a million years. Finally willing to bring your wife out to meet us—and Dad? You’ve kept her hidden for ages, Bennett!”
Bennett didn’t so much as raise an eyebrow. His tone was flat and unmoved, as if he were merely reading the weather report. “Everyone’s free tonight, that’s all. But my wife’s a little shy and reserved, so try not to overwhelm her.”
Julian suppressed a smirk. Shy, was she? He’d like to see for himself what kind of woman could catch the eye of someone as frosty as Bennett, and still be kept so thoroughly under wraps. Maybe she was truly something special… or maybe she was someone who didn’t belong on this stage at all. Either way, he might just find a way to use this to his advantage.
As dinner time approached, the group drifted into the living room, chatting idly about nothing in particular. But Yale and Julian couldn’t help glancing toward the front door, their minds clearly elsewhere.
Yale eyed the clock on the wall. It was officially dinner time. He cleared his throat and said, “Julian, why don’t you call Gwyneth? See where she is—it’s not like her to be late.”
Then he turned to Bennett, a hint of impatience and testing in his voice. “Bennett, where’s your wife? Is she on her way? We can’t keep everyone waiting forever, can we?”
Bennett sat serenely on the sofa, fingertips lightly drumming the armrest, unhurried and unbothered. “No rush. She said she’d be here, so she will.”
Julian took out his phone, ready to dial Gwyneth’s number, when the sound of the front door opening and the housekeeper’s greeting reached them from the hallway.
All three men perked up instantly.
Yale and Julian both straightened in their chairs, eyes fixed expectantly on the entrance.
They were sure it was Bennett’s mysterious wife at last.
But as a slender, graceful figure appeared in the doorway, Julian’s eyes lit up.
Gwyneth.
