Revenge Wears My Ring novel Chapter 49

Human Resources Director’s Office.

Gwyneth pushed open the frosted glass door to HR, finding Jonah, the director, busy sorting through a stack of files. The moment he saw her, he stood up at once. “Gwyneth? Is there something you need?”

She set the Department Transfer Request form gently on his desk, her smile polite and measured. “Jonah, I’d like to apply for a transfer to the Marketing Department.”

Jonah’s eyebrows rose in surprise. “Marketing?”

She nodded, her finger tapping on the official-sounding reason she’d written:

“To gain hands-on experience and deepen my understanding of our business.”

Sunlight filtered through the blinds, scattering shifting patterns across her face, making her real feelings unreadable.

Jonah glanced between the form and Gwyneth’s expression, absentmindedly rubbing the company seal with his thumb. “This… will need to go through a special approval process. I’ll have to check with the CEO first, since you’re a direct appointee.”

“I understand.” Gwyneth dipped her head, her skirt sweeping in a graceful arc as she turned. “Please consult with him. I’ll check back later.”

The second the door closed behind her, Jonah grabbed the landline.

“Mr. Boyd, Gwyneth just requested a transfer to Marketing,” Jonah said in a low voice. “What do you think—”

The sound of a pen tapping against a desk came through the receiver.

“Approved,” Bennett’s voice cut in, cold and precise even over the phone. “Process it as usual.”

Jonah hesitated. “But the Marketing Department right now—”

“Do you need me to repeat myself?”

“No, sir! I’ll get on it right away.”

Out in the hallway, Gwyneth stood by the HR entrance, fingers drumming lightly on her arm as she waited for Jonah’s answer.

He hung up and hurried out, catching sight of her. “Ms. Fletcher, your transfer has been approved.”

Gwyneth smiled faintly, taking the paperwork from him. “Thank you.”

She walked away without noticing the way Jonah seemed about to say something, then thought better of it.

Executive Suite.

As soon as Gwyneth opened the glass door, Joy sprang up from her desk, eyes wide. “Gwyneth, you’re really transferring to Marketing?”

The entire office fell silent, every gaze shifting to her.

Gwyneth just smiled, absentmindedly straightening a stack of files. “Yes. I’m leaving today.”

Her colleagues exchanged uneasy glances—

Marketing? Everyone knew that was the company’s version of exile.

Desiree leaned against the doorway to the break room, crimson lips pressed to her coffee mug, a trace of mockery glinting in her eyes. “Well, look at you, Gwyneth. Moving up in the world?”

Before he could finish, the deputy head of Marketing, Marcus Clayton, strode past, shooting them a frosty glare. “Nothing better to do? Why don’t you double-check last quarter’s financial reports instead?”

They fell silent at once, scattering in embarrassment.

A shadow seemed to fall over Gwyneth’s new desk.

“New here, are you?” Marcus’s beer belly nearly brushed her desktop as he loosened his tie, his oily face stretching into a forced smile. “I’m Marcus, Deputy Director of Marketing.”

He pressed a gold-embossed business card onto her keyboard, his pudgy fingers “accidentally” grazing the back of her hand.

So this is the one Ms. Sutton asked me to ‘look after’? Pretty little thing, he mused.

Well, she can’t blame me for not playing nice.

Gwyneth’s brow furrowed and she quickly moved her hand away before he could touch her.

“It’s company policy for newcomers to attend ‘team building’ events,” Marcus went on, oblivious to her reaction. His breath reeked of stale booze and cigarettes. “Tonight at eight, Joyful Club, private lounge 888.”

A few knowing snickers rippled through the office.

Gwyneth’s gaze was calm and sharp, her lips curving in an indifferent smile.

“Team building?” she repeated, her voice even and clear. The room fell silent for a moment.

“What’s wrong, Ms. Fletcher? Not interested?” Marcus leaned against her desk, tapping his fingers, smirking. “Company rules—rookies have to toughen up before they can move up.”
