Why is Mr. Boyd here too? This must be serious—really serious! There’s no way he could’ve known about this. When Ziggy gets back, he’ll definitely be finished.
Even if Ziggy lets him off, Mr. Boyd will never let this slide.
Forcing a smile, Ziggy managed a strained laugh. “Of course not, of course not. Hahaha, no problem at all.”
Just then, a server interrupted the tense atmosphere, bringing in the final course—a piping hot truffle-baked lobster. As he walked past Gwyneth, his foot suddenly slipped!
The entire platter, with its scalding sauce and lobster meat, along with half a bottle of opened Burgundy, tipped straight toward Gwyneth’s shoulder.
“Watch out!” Yardley, seated closest to her, reached out instinctively.
But someone else was faster.
A dark figure sliced through the warm light—no one had even noticed Bennett had gotten up. In a flash, he stepped between Gwyneth and the oncoming disaster.
His left arm came down like a steel barrier in front of her, taking the full brunt of the sizzling sauce, which hissed as it drenched his suit sleeve. With his right hand, he caught the falling wine bottle before it could smash.
Crimson wine splashed across his chest, soaking his shirt completely, but Gwyneth, shielded behind him, didn’t get a single drop on her.
For an instant, time seemed frozen.
The server collapsed to the floor, panic-stricken. Yardley’s outstretched hand hovered uselessly in midair.
Gwyneth felt a sudden heat at the back of her neck—some of the hot broth had splashed onto her, trickling down her collar. In front of her, Bennett’s wine-soaked chest was so close she could smell the sharp tang of alcohol mixed with his crisp cedar cologne, overwhelming all her senses.
“Are you hurt?” Bennett asked, his breath warm as it ruffled her hair. His right arm was still braced protectively, the soaked fabric clinging to his tensed muscles.
Gwyneth shook her head, a bit dazed, her throat tight. She could see where the scalding oil had curled the edge of his suit sleeve; his skin underneath was surely red and burning.
