Yohan shrank under Gwyneth’s icy stare, forcing a shaky smile onto his face. “Ms. Fletcher, this is a highly technical issue, honestly… we—”
“‘Highly technical’?” Gwyneth cut him off, leaning forward just slightly, her hands folded calmly on the table. In an instant, an invisible pressure settled over the room, squeezing the air from everyone’s lungs.
“Let me show you what a real problem looks like.”
She picked up the tablet beside her, swiped across the screen with a few deft motions, and then spun it around, displaying it to Yohan and the others.
“Ten minutes ago,” Gwyneth began, her tone as cold and precise as a scalpel, each word landing heavier than the last, “I accessed the core financial database—the very one you claim was ‘compromised by elite hackers’ and ‘maliciously altered.’”
She paused, her gaze slicing across Yohan’s face, which had already turned the color of chalk, then landed on the deputy director, whose trembling was audible.
“I retrieved every original voucher, sub-ledger, and general ledger backup for this quarter. Along with… the electronic file containing Winston’s digital signature for the final financial report.”
“Every single document—intact, complete, untouched.”
She flicked her finger over the screen. “The backup timestamp? Yesterday at 5:37 p.m.—exactly one hour before your so-called ‘hacker attack’ supposedly happened.”
Silence. Dead silence.
The only sounds in the conference room were ragged breaths and the chattering of the deputy director’s teeth.
Yohan’s face twitched uncontrollably, sweat beading on his forehead and rolling down in thick drops. He opened his mouth, but not a sound came out. His mind was a total blank.
How could she have found the backups so quickly?!
