CHAPTER FOURTY SEVEN
KAIA’S POV
I walked away from Elder Agatha’s house with a head full of questions and a heart full of confusion.
I was even more confused now than I was going in.
Her words kept replaying over and over in my mind like an old, broken record.
“If that man ever remembers who he truly is, he could become their worst nightmare.”
I was trying so hard to pretend that I understood a thing she said–that her words actually made sense–but it just wasn’t happening.
What did that even mean?
What kind of nightmare? And who were they? Why would anyone go to such lengths to erase someone’s identity?
The cool breeze brushed against my skin as I walked, but I barely felt it. My thoughts were too loud, crashing into one another as I tried to make sense of what I’d just been told. I didn’t even notice that I’d wandered off the usual path.
It wasn’t until I passed a crooked old tree with an odd forked trunk that I realized something was off. My
steps slowed. I blinked, looking around.
“Damn it.”
I cursed under my breath as I realized I’d ended up on a wrong path without even knowing it. I must have
taken a wrong turn sometime while I was lost in my thoughts.
I facepalmed and spun around, retracing my steps quickly with growing frustration. The last thing I needed right now was to get lost in my own damn territory while Silver was out there, possibly glowing like a spirit wolf and getting closer to some truth neither of us understood.
To think I’d walked this path a thousand times. Who gets lost in their own territory?
I shoved my hands into my pockets as I walked, trying to find the shortcut that led back to the right path. My feet were moving on their own, as I wasn’t really paying attention to where they were taking me. My mind was too busy trying to make sense of everything. I was too deep in thought.
So deep, in fact, that I almost missed it,
I had just walked past a big tree when something in the corner of my eye caught my attention. It didn’t register right away. I took a few more steps before my brain finally caught up with what my eyes had seen. I stopped suddenly.
Wait… What was that?
I turned around slowly and walked back toward the tree. My heart thudded as I peeked around the trunk–and there they were.
A group of people stood some distance away in a small clearing. I ducked behind the tree quickly and peered out carefully.
P
CHAPTER FOURTY SEVEN
My eyes narrowed as I recognized some of the faces. Elder Raymond… Laura’s father. And beside him stood Laura herself, her arms crossed and a deep frown on her face. Next to her was her brother Donovan, Gareth’s new beta. A few other elders were there too, but something felt off.
I studied them closer, trying to understand why none of them looked familiar.
That’s when I realized–they weren’t all from Moonveil. Some of them wore different robes and crests I didn’t
recognize. They must’ve come from another territory. Maybe even from the Council, considering how weirdly they were dressed.
What were they doing here? And why did they look so tense?
Why did everyone look like someone peed in their breakfast?
I hesitated, then slowly and silently moved a little closer. I stayed low and hid behind a thick bush. It was
broad daylight, and if I got too close, they could easily spot me. So I stayed where I was, just close enough to try listening in.
I closed my eyes for a second and focused my wolf hearing.
“Lilac, help me,” I whispered to my wolf, and I immediately felt her stir.
“What?” she asked in confusion.
“Help me,” I repeated. “I’m trying to catch what that meeting is about, but I can’t get too close or else they’ll
know.”
“Oh,” Lilac said, finally catching up.
The sounds around me–the wind, birds, rustling leaves–all faded as I tuned in on their voices.
“…If this gets out, Alpha Gareth will never be allowed to ascend the throne. No amount of power or
connection could make that happen,” one of the unfamiliar elders said. His voice was low but filled with
worry.
My heart skipped a beat.
What?
What was that?
Another voice joined in. “We all know Alpha Gareth is not from royal linage by any chance, and ordinarily he
shouldn’t even be allowed to seat on that throne. If the rumours gets out It would lead to chaos and division
amongst our kind. The moment people find out about this, they’ll start digging–trying to uncover everything.
If that happens, it’s only a matter of time before the truth is out in the open, and we cannot afford that. Not at
this point.”
“What truth?” I whispered under my breath. My eyebrows drew together as I leaned in even more, barely breathing. “Lilac, focus.”
now. Before
Laura stepped forward, and I strained my ear even more to listen to what she was saying.
“Then we don’t let it get out,” she said quickly. Her voice was urgent. “We need to crown G
anyone starts suspecting anything. Before the rumors grow into something we can’t contain.
Elder Raymond nodded. “She’s right. If we delay any longer, we might lose our chance. We’ve worked so hard for this day–we can’t let it slip through our fingers.”
CHAPTER FOURTY SEVEN
But one of the other elders shook his head. “It’s not that simple, Elder Raymond. The whispers have already started spreading. Slowly, yes–but they’ve started. We’re running out of time. But the problem is that if we move too fast now, it will only attract more suspicion. People might start to wonder why we’re suddenly in such a hurry, and that could make them question everything. It’s too risky”
Donovan stepped forward, his hands clenched into fists. “Then e act fast,” he said. “Go ahead with the coronation. Beat the rumors to it. By the time the truth gets out, it’ll be too late. Gareth will already be King. No one will dare to challenge him then, even if it so happens to turn out that the rumors are true–which, by
the
way, we’re not even sure of yet.”
“Exactly,” Laura added. “And… maybe we should find out who’s behind the rumors… and silence them once
and for all.”
There was a moment of silence.
I stared at her, stunned. Silence them? Did she mean… hurt them? Or worse?
Was she suggesting they kill someone over whatever this is? Are you kidding me?!
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. What were they trying to hide? And how far were they willing to go to
protect it?
I didn’t move. I just stayed crouched in place, staring and listening as my mind tried to piece it all together.
Exactly how many people is Gareth planning to go through just to get his hands on this crown?
“Elder Raymond,” one of the elders from the foreign group said, turning to Laura’s father, “inform your
son–in–law that we will arrive in two days. The official preparations for his coronation will begin then. We cannot afford to waste any more time.”
Elder Raymond gave a slow nod. “Understood.”
The elder went on, “According to ancient tradition, a representative from Eldercrest Hollow will join us. As you all know, Eldercrest Hollow is the sacred place of the kingmakers–even though they haven’t been active in years. One of their own will have to oversee everything–the preparations, the rituals, the entire coronation.”
The rest of the group murmured in agreement.
“Then it’s settled,” said Donovan. “We move forward.”
“We’ll meet again in two days,” one of them added. “Make sure everything is ready.”
With that, the group slowly began to disperse. I ducked lower as they walked past my hiding spot, trying not to breathe too loudly. When their footsteps finally faded and I was sure they were gone, I stood up slowly.
My legs felt shaky.
I looked in the direction they had gone, my heart still racing.
What had I just overheard?
They were planning something big–something secret. And dangerous. And the way they talked… it sounded like they were hiding something about Gareth’s coronation. Something that, if the rest o world found out, would ruin his chances of becoming King of the Wolves.
What was it?
Did Gareth commit some kind of heinous crime that they were helping him bury?
CHAPTER FOURTY SEVEN
Was that it?
And who was spreading the rumors?
Most importantly, what did they mean by “if it gets out…“? What was the secret they were protecting so desperately?
I had no answers. Just more questions.
And that scared me.
I took a deep breath and stepped back, trying to calm myself. My mind was spinning, and I knew I needed to
think carefully about what to do next.
Should I tell someone? But who? And would they even believe me?
Maybe I should talk to my father about this?…
But… what if he blows this out of proportion?
At this point, I don’t even know what to tell him, since I wasn’t sure of what was happening myself.
What if I misunderstood what I heard?…
But I didn’t, though.
I mean, whatever this is, it has to be something big if they’re trying to hide it. Gareth wasn’t even King yet, and things were already starting to get creepy.
Should we be worried?
I wrapped my arms around myself as I walked away, glancing over my shoulder a few times just to make sure
no one saw me.
One thing was clear: something wasn’t right.
And if I wanted to protect the pack… I needed to find out the truth.
