-CLAIRE’S POV-

The office door clicked shut. My pulse quickened as silence settled between us. “Alexander.” His name rolled off my tongue, heavier than I intended.

His eyes found mine. Heat flickered there. “Yes?”

My fingers traced the edge of his desk. “I need to discuss the next stage. Monica took the bait perfectly. Time to push harder.”

Alexander’s shoulders tensed. His jaw tightened. “What are you planning now? Because last time had that bastard crawling all over you.”

I stepped closer. Close enough to catch his scent. Clean soap and something darker underneath. “You’ll love this one.” My lips curved into a smile. “I’m moving to a penthouse. Until the wedding.”

The color drained from his face. His hands clenched into fists..

“No.” The word came out quick. Final. “You’re not leaving.”

I shrugged, keeping my voice light. Inside, my heart thrashed against my ribs. “It’s temporary. And gorgeous.”

“Claire.” He stood abruptly. The chair scraped against the floor. “Absolutely fucking not. You stay here. With me.

His protectiveness sent warmth shooting through my chest. I pushed it down. Focused on the plan.

“Listen before you explode.” I moved around the desk. Each step deliberate. “This penthouse sits directly across from Richard’s house.”

Alexander’s eyes widened. His breathing shifted. Shorter. Sharper. “You want to live across from him?” His voice dropped dangerously low. “Have you lost your mind?”

“Think about it.” I reached for his arm. His muscles jumped under my touch. “Every morning, he’ll see me. Every night, he’ll watch my lights. It’ll eat him alive.”

“It’ll give him ideas.” Alexander grabbed my wrist. His thumb pressed against my pulse. “Dangerous ones.”

Heat spread from where his skin touched mine. I fought to keep my voice steady.

“You always tell me to stay away from Richard. This keeps distance while driving him crazy. I’ll torment him from across the street.”

He pulled me closer. Our bodies almost touching. His chest rose and fell rapidly.

“I don’t want you near him at all.” His breath warmed my face. “This isn’t distance. This is provocation.”

“Exactly.” I lifted my chin. Our lips were inches apart. “Richard’s already shaking. Seeing me every day will remind him what he threw away. He’ll be weak knowing I’m close but untouchable.”

Alexander’s grip tightened. His other hand found my waist..

“What happens when he shows up at your door?”

“He won’t dare.” I pressed my palm against his chest. His heart thundered beneath my fingers. “His company will keep him busy. He’ll obsess over my presence instead of making moves.”

“Or he’ll become desperate.” Alexander’s voice turned rough. “Try to force a confrontation.”

“Then my strong, protective husband will handle it.” I smiled up at him. The words tasted different now. Less like pretense. More like the truth.

His pupils dilated. Something shifted in his expression.

“Claire.” My name sounded strained. “I worry about you getting hurt.”

“I know.” The admission slipped out before I could stop it. “But I’ve handled Richard before. I’m not afraid.”

Alexander studied my face. His thumb traced my wrist where my pulse jumped.

“Living across from him feels like playing with fire.”

Heat flared in my chest. “Would you rather I sit around doing nothing while he walks free?” My voice rose. While he acts like he won’t pay for what he did? If you have a better plan, tell me now.”

Silence stretched between us. His eyes searched mine.

“This is my chance to take control. I won’t let him win.”

Alexander’s shoulders sagged. His grip loosened but didn’t release me. “Promise me you’ll be careful.” His voice turned soft. Vulnerable. “Let me check on you.‘

“I promise.” The words came out breathless. My skin tingled where he touched me.

“Scout’s honor.” I held up my pinky, trying to lighten the mood. The movement made me sway closer. His scent wrapped around me. My thoughts scattered.

“Must be the sex,” I whispered before catching myself.

His eyes darkened. “What?”

My cheeks burned. “Nothing. I’ll stay safe. No unnecessary risks. I’ll keep you updated.” His thumb stroked across my pulse point. The simple touch sent electricity through my veins.

“You call me if he makes any move.” His voice dropped to almost a growl. “Any move at all.”

“Deal.” The word came out husky. “Plus, I’ll have the perfect view to watch everything he does.”
