Sterling tried his best to stay calm, but Claudia kept sneaking glances at him, thinking, Why is Sterling acting so weird today?

Normally, there was no way he’d let her get out of bed this easily.

She kept sneaking peeks at him, puzzled by his behavior.

It took all of Sterling’s effort to calm himself and get out of bed. But the moment he opened the door, something small and soft hugged his leg, calling him “Daddy.”

His mind went blank. Did the little one just call him Daddy?

“Daddy!” the little girl, who looked about three or four, called out again in her sweet voice.

She sat right on top of his foot, puffing out her cheeks. “You and Mommy are both so lazy! Every morning, Daron and I have to wake you up.”

She was so used to her parents not answering the door right away that, after knocking, she would just settle on her teddy bear rug and play with Daron until they finally appeared.

“Daddy, hurry up! You promised to take me horseback riding today.”

Claudia, who came out a little later, saw Sterling staring at Leah with his hands awkwardly at his sides. She quickly scooped up their daughter.

“We’ll head out after breakfast.”

Leah squealed with laughter and hugged her mom’s neck, planting a kiss on her cheek. “Mommy, I made your favorite ravioli with Jake. Am I great?”

Jake was their family chef, hired after Leah was born.

Sterling was always too nervous about baby food. The food he cooked could only feed himself and Claudia. That was why they hired Jake.

“Of course, Leah is the best!” Claudia kissed her on the cheek.

Leah instantly lit up, totally forgiving her sleepy parents. She stretched out her arms to Sterling. “Daddy, carry me!”

She was getting too heavy for Claudia to hold for long, but that wasn’t a problem for Sterling- he could easily lift her up high effortlessly.

Claudia didn’t let go. “Let Mommy hold you today, okay?”

Leah didn’t get the chance to answer before Sterling spoke up

“I… I’ll hold her.”

He took Leah carefully, like she was made of glass. His actions were a little clumsy but still gentle nonetheless.

Claudia pressed her lips together and watched.

After breakfast, Claudia sent the excited Leah off to her room to pack her little bag for horseback riding, then turned to Sterling.

“Hubby, where’s your ring?”

Ring? How am I supposed to know where the ring is?

And did she just call me Hubby? That sounds way too sweet, but it’s kinda nice …

Sterling dodged her gaze, his ears turning red as he coughed awkwardly. “I put it away.”

But the lie fell apart immediately.

A wedding ring was set down on the table.

“You left it on the nightstand.”

Last night, she’d said the ring hurt her when they snuggled together, so he’d taken it off.

He usually put it back on as soon as he woke up.

They stared at each other, the tension thick in the air. With no other options left, Sterling quickly explained the situation to Claudia.

“So… you’re only 18 years old right now?” Claudia stared at him, stunned.
