“I have a suggestion,” Sabrina said, sounding utterly nonchalant. “You can help each other finish your tasks.”
“How exactly?” someone in the crowd piped up.
“For instance, Whitney can take over and bark like a dog in place of any one of you—just enough to cover one person’s share.”
At first, the girls looked relieved. But the relief quickly dissolved into dread.
It was a merciful enough offer, but who would actually step up and take the humiliation for someone else?
Celine’s eyes darted hopefully to her close friends. She wished, just for a moment, that someone would shield her, just like they always had—charging ahead into trouble so she wouldn’t have to.
But all she got were nervous glances exchanged back and forth. No one moved. No one volunteered.
Whitney felt a surge of resentment twist inside her. This whole mess had started because Elena and Tiffany claimed Sabrina always bullied Celine, and they’d dragged Whitney into helping Celine “teach Sabrina a lesson.” Now, here they were—stuck in this humiliating predicament, all because of Celine. Shouldn’t Celine be the one to step forward now?
“Come on, hurry up! Don’t tell me you’re all talk and no action!” someone from the crowd shouted, impatience clear in their voice.
“Seriously, where’s your dignity? You didn’t hesitate this much when you made the bet!”
“If you’re best friends, then take your punishment together! Move it, you’re slower than a herd of turtles!”
