Thanks to Stella’s quick thinking and first aid skills, the old woman gradually regained consciousness.
The crowd that had gathered to gawk erupted in admiration, marveling at Stella as if she were some kind of miracle worker.
“Amazing,” someone whispered.
Several people immediately clamored for Stella to check them out too, while a few even pulled out their phones, hoping to get her contact information.
Stella felt a headache coming on. She forced a smile and said, “I only know a little first aid. If you’re not feeling well, you really should see a doctor at the hospital.”
She thought to herself, This is ridiculous. She didn’t even have a medical license—there was no way she was about to start giving out medical advice here.
Today was just a fluke.
She hadn’t wanted to get involved, but walking away would have left her uneasy. If the old woman had really been hurt, and she’d stood by and done nothing, she’d never have forgiven herself.
At that moment, the man who had been with the old woman finally took a good look at Stella.
She looked about sixteen or seventeen—still just a kid. But something about her hair, a muddle of bright red and green, made him instinctively wary. The way she dressed, the way she carried herself—she reminded him of troublemakers he’d seen in the city. If he’d noticed her hair earlier, he probably never would have let her near his mother.
He’d always believed that anyone with real medical skills wouldn’t look so unconventional. Yet, here she was: a teenager with extraordinary ability. The only explanation he could think of was that she’d learned it from her family.
He couldn’t help but silently marvel.
“Young lady, thank you. If it weren’t for you, I don’t dare imagine what might have happened today,” he said again, gratitude in his voice.
Stella waved him off. “No need to thank me. It was nothing, really.”
She stood and dusted off her jacket, ready to leave.
Seeing that his mother was fully awake, the man helped her sit down on the steps nearby.
Just then, the old woman reached out and took Stella’s hand, her face warm with a grandmotherly smile.
“Thank you, dear. You really saved my life today. What’s your name?”
