As soon as Sommer stepped out, she saw soup spilled all over the kitchen floor.

Hester’s delicate hands were scalded bright red, the angry color stark even as water ran over her skin.

Sabrina stood off to the side, watching it all with a cold, detached gaze.

Sommer rushed over in a panic, wrapping an arm around Hester’s shoulders, her face full of worry and sympathy.

“Hester, are you alright? Does it hurt?” she asked, her voice trembling.

Hester blinked, snapping back from the shock, and shut off the faucet. Tears streamed down her face as she clutched her burnt hand, her voice breaking, “Sommer, is my hand ruined? It hurts— it hurts so much.”

Sommer’s heart nearly broke for her. She examined the burn: the skin was swollen, angry red, with blisters already beginning to form.

“How on earth did this happen? Where’s Dr. Lawrence? Someone, go get Dr. Lawrence— now!” Sommer barked at the housekeeper behind her, urgency clear in her tone.

Sabrina ambled over, barely bothering to hide her indifference. She glanced at Hester’s swollen hand, then feigned shock, covering her mouth in mock horror.

“Oh, Hester— your hand! Are you okay?” she gasped.

Hester already felt miserable; Sabrina’s performance only made her feel worse.

“Stop standing there— call the doctor! Will my hand be scarred?” Hester’s voice shook with anxiety.

If anything happened to her hands, how would she ever paint again? And for a girl who cared about her appearance, a scar would be devastating.

Sommer tried to soothe her, gently saying, “Don’t worry, medicine’s come a long way. Even if there’s a scar, there are ways to fix it. You’ll be okay.”

Once Hester was calmed, Sommer turned on Sabrina, her eyes icy cold, voice booming with anger.

“Sabrina, how did this happen? Hester was fine a moment ago— did you do something to her?”
