On the other side of the estate, Uliana followed Hester down a quiet, secluded path.
Marshall sensed someone approaching from behind. His handsome features darkened ever so slightly, but when he turned and saw who it was, his frown eased.
Hester pretended to be surprised at the “accidental” encounter.
“Oh, it’s you!” she exclaimed, feigning mild astonishment.
Marshall offered a polite nod, the perfect gentleman.
Hester kept a gracious smile on her lips. “Sorry, I may have interrupted your peace. Celine mentioned you like quiet places. I’ll leave you to it.”
She didn’t wait for him to respond and turned as if to go.
But his voice stopped her. She couldn’t help but feel a surge of delight, though when she turned back, her face wore a look of innocent confusion. “Yes?”
Marshall’s mind was still caught up in the image of Conrad with his arm around Celine. The memory sparked fresh annoyance—how could she act so familiar with another man right in front of him? Even though their relationship hadn’t been officially defined, their families were already engaged, and everyone assumed they were a couple. Shouldn’t Celine know to keep her distance from other men? Was she disregarding him, or did she simply not care about him at all?
The thought left Marshall even more agitated. Comparing Celine’s behavior to Hester’s tact only made it worse. Look at Hester—she understood boundaries, knew when to step away and avoid gossip. Now that was a woman who understood propriety.
Marshall pushed down his irritation and approached Hester. “Seems you like the quiet too. What a coincidence—I’m the same. I don’t know much about the Sutton family. Would I be lucky enough to have Miss Sutton show me around?”
Hester was over the moon. The man she liked was standing right in front of her—she would have gladly spent the whole day with him. Still, she maintained an air of composure, keeping a proper distance.
“Of course,” she replied. “I’m the host, after all. It’s my pleasure. This way, please.”
