But his voice stopped her. She couldn’t help but feel a surge of delight, though when she turned back, her face wore a look of innocent confusion. “Yes?”

Marshall’s mind was still caught up in the image of Conrad with his arm around Celine. The memory sparked fresh annoyance—how could she act so familiar with another man right in front of him? Marshall pushed down his irritation and approached Hester. “Seems you like the quiet too. What a coincidence—I’m the same. I don’t know much about the Sutton family. Would I be lucky enough to have Miss Sutton show me around?”

Hester was over the moon. The man she liked was standing right in front of her—she would have gladly spent the whole day with him. Still, she maintained an air of composure, keeping a proper distance.
