She couldn’t very well run off to investigate, so she composed herself and walked gracefully over to Sommer and Desmond.
With a sweet smile, she called out, “Dad, Mom—what’s going on?”
Sommer’s heart melted the moment Hester called her “Mom.” Beaming with delight, she reached for Hester’s hand and spoke gently, her voice warm and tender.
“Hester, having a wonderful daughter like you is a blessing for both your father and me. Your brilliance makes the Sutton family proud. From now on, you’ll always be our daughter. Sabrina isn’t in the ballroom right now, so tonight, you’re the star. Go on and meet some new friends.”
“Thank you for your love, Dad and Mom. I promise I’ll always cherish and honor you.”
Hester obediently slipped her arms through Desmond and Sommer’s, letting them guide her around the room.
Together, the couple introduced Hester to the guests. Of course, Desmond made sure to present her only to those with real influence and status.
Tonight marked Hester’s official debut into the Port City aristocracy.
It wasn’t long before a number of young men approached, eager to invite her to dance.
Hester didn’t hesitate; the gentlemen who invited her were handsome and well-mannered. Her dancing was exquisite—every bit as graceful as Celine’s, and she was equally skilled in music, art, and literature.
Her performance drew murmurs of admiration from the audience.
Not everyone was pleased, though. A few society girls watched Hester bask in the spotlight, their jealousy thinly veiled.
“Hmph, what’s she so proud of? If Sabrina could dance, Hester wouldn’t even be on stage.”
“Still, you have to admit, she’s a beautiful dancer. Sabrina grew up… well, let’s just say she never had a chance to learn.”
“Exactly. On a night like this, with so many of Port City’s most important people attending, Mr. Sutton would never let Sabrina embarrass herself.”
