The commotion in the main hall was impossible to ignore. Shawn’s assistant whispered urgently in his ear: Mrs. Sutton and the Suttons’ adopted daughter had been attacked with acid.
Shawn couldn’t believe that Sabrina didn’t already know.
Yet she seemed completely unfazed by her mother’s injuries, as if it hardly mattered to her.
What kind of pain could make a young woman so utterly hopeless about her own mother?
He’d nearly stepped forward, wanting to tell her, “Whatever you need, I can help.” But just as he moved, he saw Bryce heading toward Sabrina.
Shawn hesitated, retreating into the shadows instead.
He wasn’t sure what had come over him, or why he suddenly felt compelled to help her.
While he stood there lost in thought, he heard her calm, almost indifferent voice.
“Let’s go see what happened.”
“Alright!”
At that moment, a bodyguard rushed over to Sabrina, panic etched across his face.
“Miss, something’s happened—Octavia’s in trouble!”
“What?” Sabrina immediately forgot about Bryce and hurried off with the bodyguard.
“Where is she?” Sabrina demanded.
“This way, Miss. Please, follow me,” the bodyguard replied, leading her quickly down a hallway.
Sabrina’s eyes glinted, betraying no emotion.
Bryce hurried after her, catching up just in time to hear that the Sutton family matriarch was in trouble.
Wasn’t Stella supposed to be with her?
How did this even happen?
A cold shiver ran down his spine. Maybe Octavia had been pushed too far and was on her last legs.
If even Stella couldn’t save her, things must really be bad.
Muttering to himself, Bryce followed in Sabrina’s wake.
As they reached the rear garden, Sabrina suddenly stopped.
The bodyguard, noticing she’d halted, urged her forward anxiously.
