Celine was gripped by panic. Her mind raced with dread.
If her parents ever discovered that she’d been the one who tried to stab Sabrina—and that her own fall and injury had only happened because she lost her balance—the entire “pure and sweet” image she’d so carefully maintained would shatter.
No. She couldn’t let her parents realize she’d been lying. To them, she was always the kind, obedient, perfect daughter. She wouldn’t let Sabrina ruin that.
Meanwhile, Sommer kept pressing Sabrina. “Pull up the security footage. I want to see the evidence. Now.”
Just as Sabrina unlocked her phone, Celine slumped against the couch, pressing a trembling hand to her forehead, feigning weakness as she gazed at Sommer.
“Mom, I already told you—I fell on my own. Why can’t you believe me? How am I supposed to face Sabrina if you keep doubting me like this?”
Her tone was tinged with hurt and frustration, and the moment Sommer saw Celine’s pale, pain-stricken face, she understood. Of course she did. She couldn’t bear to see her daughter suffering.
“That’s enough, Sabrina. We’re not going to pursue this.” Sommer’s voice was cold. “We haven’t even addressed the issue of you secretly installing cameras.”
At that moment, Dr. Lawrence arrived, and together they helped Celine downstairs to treat her wound.
Desmond watched the whole scene from the sidelines, his expression icy and detached.
He’d known all along that Sabrina wasn’t to blame. It was Celine who’d manipulated the situation, steering everyone’s suspicions toward Sabrina. Still, he hadn’t spoken up for her. Not once.
As Sommer and Celine left, Desmond turned and walked away without a word.
No one mentioned the fact that Celine had tried to frame Sabrina. Not even a perfunctory reprimand. Nothing.
Sabrina wondered if she should find time to have another paternity test done. Was it possible, she thought bitterly, for parents to love another’s child so openly and treat their own with such indifference? They showed her less kindness than they would a stranger.
Sometimes she even wondered if there was some ulterior motive to them bringing her back into the family.
