Raiden’s pov
I let out a howl as we burst through the final line of the forest. The house was consumed by flames, black smoke rising to the sky and painting the night air with the stench of smoke and burnt flesh.
There are a lot of the pack members surrounding the burning structure, mom and dad, Lester……Damon. Everyone tries to help the firefighters who were part of the pack as well.
But the flames seemed angry, relentless to eat the structure alive.
“We need to try to get him out!” Dad yelled. “Even though he’s dead, we need to at least get him out. Gio can’t go like this,” his voice grows hoarse with grief as mom barks orders at some of the wolves.
Amelia cries above me as I skid to a stop. She hops off quickly and I shift into my human form rapidly when I see her rush toward the house.
“Dad!” She screams, her voice piercing through the chaos. I catch her around her waist and hold her back before she could
run into the flames.
Her finger nails latch onto the skin of my arm as she screams for me to release her. I can’t do that. I hold her tighter.
“I’m sorry baby,” I whisper, tugging her back. The heat of the house brushed across our skin and we were not even that close.
“He’s still in there Raiden!” She cried, her chest rising and falling. “He’s still in there! We need to get him out!” Her cries grow louder, her words more broken. Ripped from the grief of her soul.
“Son,” dad throws jeans at me with a nod and I give him a thankful smile when I catch it with one hand while the other hold a sobbing Amelia.
I tug on the jeans as quickly as I can as I cling to Amelia so she wouldn’t go. I was scared that if I let her go she’d burst into
the house with flames. I was not about to risk that.
Suddenly the roof collapsed, making everyone back away and gasp. Amelia’s cries grow louder and Damon who was one of the wolves who were trying to out the fire, throws the hose to the side and yells.
“I’m going in!”
Lester is quick to hold him back but Damon is pretty strong. “If I don’t go in there now, there will be nothing left of my uncle to bury!” His words are torn from his chest, pain curling through each word.
“You can’t go in man! That would be suicide!” Lester tried to get through him but Damon thrashes to get free.
“Halt Damon!” Mom shouts, her aura causing him to bend the knee and watch the house with a helpless gaze. My chest tightens for my friend, feeling useless as an alpha at the moment.
But when his eyes slid over to me and Amelia, they narrow on my mate. “You!” He snarls, eyes twisting with anger. “You caused all of this!”
Amelia flinches and I growled. “Damon! Don’t you ever say-
“I see his body!” One of the pack members yelled from the back of the house.
Damon, Lester, dad and mom all rushed to the back of the house while the rest still tries to out the fire. Amelia tries to follow but I can’t let her see him like this. I can’t watch her break even more.
“Raiden please,” she begged, tugging at her arm. “I need to see him.”
I caved in. Even though I didn’t want to see her cry even more I know she wanted to see him badly
So I nod and we both follow the others. By the time we got there, they were already pulling out his burnt body. Something

sharp shatters through my heart as my dad and a few other pack members lower Giovanni’s blackened body gently to the
ground.
He is barely recognizable and the stench of scorched flesh lingers in the air heavily. Amelia lets out a torn cry as she crumbles forward, her knees hitting the ground. I crouch down to hold her in my arms as she cries loudly.
Damon staggered forward, his chest heaving, eyes wild as he falls to his knees beside his uncle. “Uncle Gio,” his voice cracks.
As I look over at Giovanni’s body I notice that there was a dagger in his chest and when my eyes lift to stare at dad and mom they both nod as if telling me that what I was thinking was indeed correct.
Giovanni didn’t die from the fire.
He died from the dagger.
