“You’re naïvely innocent,” Jamie sneered. “Do you know how much the Kalen family would owe in breach penalties if a contract is terminated before completion? Even if I’d crippled your hand-or killed you- this partnership would still have to continue. With your low intellect, you think you’ll survive working at the Kalen Group?” 

He set down his teacup and smiled with casual contempt. “Better go study a few more years.’ 

Sharon didn’t flare with anger. Her voice remained level. 

“So this agreement was a joke to you, Jamie?”

“Exactly.” Jamie tore off his last fig leaf of pretense and admitted it outright. “I was toying with you. I didn’t expect you’d actually take it seriously.” 

He laughed lightly. “If you’re upset, sue me. I’d like to see which court would entertain such a childish wager.” 

He wore the insolent look of a man who believed himself untouchable. 

Sharon didn’t rise to the bait. She turned and looked calmly at Richard and Rick. “Do you agree with him?” 

Richard answered immediately, “Sharon, I will handle this. No matter the cost, billions, even trillions, we won’t let the man who harmed you go unpunished.” 

Thomas interjected, blunt and practical. “Talking isn’t enough. If Jamie wreaks havoc on your turf, shouldn’t you teach him a lesson? Since he ruined Sharon’s hand, fairness demands he lose his as well. That would at least restore some of Sharon’s dignity.”
