Chapter 574
Carter finished reading the document quickly.
“Richard,” Carter said, his voice low and cool. “I’m sorry, but I won’t hand over custody of Theo.”
The refusal came sharp and final, without a flicker of hesitation.
Even Richard and Rick, who prided themselves on reading people well, looked taken aback. Victoria, too, was caught off guard.
Five percent of Kalen Group’s shares was an astronomical offer. And yet, Carter’s stance remained firm.
“Theo is my son,” he said clearly. “No matter what conditions are offered, I will not give his custody to anyone.”
Richard said, “Carter, handing custody to us doesn’t mean you stop being his father. You and Sharon will always be Theo’s parents, no matter what.”
But what surprised Richard wasn’t just the rejection. It was that Carter didn’t even ask for terms. He refused outright.
That, Richard hadn’t expected.
People lined up for the chance to associate with the Kalen family. Most were turned away without a glance. Yet here they were, willingly reaching out, and Carter was turning them down?
Did Carter not understand what it meant? That with the Kalen family’s backing, Theo would gain access to resources and connections far beyond anything the Biggs family could offer?
With the right guidance, the Biggs family could climb social ranks in record time. Even becoming a top-tier household was only
a matter of when, not if.
Richard, now watching Sharon, shifted his focus.
“Sharon, you’re Theo’s mother. I’d like to hear your thoughts.”
Sharon closed the folder and turned to her son instead.
“Theo, what do you think?”
The Kalen family didn’t lack children, and certainly not heirs. The fact that Richard was willing to offer shares meant he truly
valued Theo.
At this point, Carter couldn’t very well refuse further.
Sharon turned to Theo. “Theo, would you like to stay here with Richard for a while, or go back with us?”
Still unfamiliar with Richard, Theo didn’t want to stay. “I’ll go back with you and Dad.”
Sharon rose to her feet and looked at Richard. “Richard, there are some things I’d like to speak with you about privately.”
He sighed at her continued formality, but didn’t show any irritation. “Alright.”
The two of them left the room and headed into Richard’s study.
