conflict.

“In the past, Sharon was a nobody. She was easy to suppress. But now…”

Thomas’s tone turned layered, almost amused.

“Now, the people around her aren’t easy to deal with. The Kalen family won’t be able to control her so easily. And isn’t it far more satisfying to watch them tear each other apart, then swoop in and destroy them both without lifting a finger?”

His words were like a sedative, easing the storm in Kelly’s chest. Her pulse slowed. Her breathing evened out.

“You’re right,” she said at last. “I was too impatient.”

Now that Sharon had gained yet another layer to her identity, it was nearly impossible to make her vanish without consequence.

As Kelly spiraled deeper into her thoughts, Thomas spoke again.

The mention of the earring made her heart lurch.

“Yes, I still have it. Why?”

She had once considered deliberately losing it. But with Thomas’s reach and resourcefulness, who knew if he’d simply find it again? “No,” he replied calmly, his tone giving nothing away. “You can’t wear just one earring. I’m having another made to match it, so you can wear the pair.”

Only then did Kelly breathe a quiet sigh of relief. “All right.”
