When the ride ended, Theo and Matty hopped off, faces glowing with delight. The two children immediately began scanning for their next adventure.

Xavier’s gaze slid to Kelly, who clung to Carter’s side like a stubborn shadow. His eyes gleamed with mischief as he suggested, “Matty, haven’t you always wanted to try the pirate ship? How about we go now?”

The first thing Matty did was turn to Sharon, seeking her opinion. “Sharon, do you want to go?”

Meeting Matty’s hopeful eyes, Sharon gave a small nod. Then she turned toward Theo.

“Theo, if you’d rather not, you can wait for us down here…”

Her words were cut short.

“I want to go!” Theo interrupted firmly.

She studied him for a long moment, then nodded. “Alright, let’s go.”

In the past, whenever Kelly was present, outings were limited to safe, gentle activities— rowboats, quiet strolls-yet trouble always seemed to follow her anyway. This time, Sharon didn’t bother asking Carter’s opinion. She simply led the group toward the pirate ship.

Carter’s eyes never left her. He had already decided he could not allow Sharon and Xavier to grow any closer. The moment they moved, he followed.

Kelly froze. “Wait… alone?”

Distracted, Carter’s eyes never left Sharon and Xavier. As soon as they moved to enter, he strode quickly after them, not sparing Kelly another glance.

She stood rooted for a moment, stunned, unable to believe it. Then, almost instinctively, she hurried forward. Spotting Theo about to step inside, she called out, “Theo, you’re still young, and your health isn’t good. This ride is dangerous. You shouldn’t go.”

It had become her habit to deprive Sharon of anything she wanted. Whatever Sharon longed for, she seized. Whatever Sharon enjoyed, she found ways to forbid-always ensuring her own presence felt indispensable.

Theo’s delicate face creased with conflict.
