Sharon’s eyes burned with unmasked disgust as she glared at him.

“Carter, when will you finally stop showing up in front of me and tormenting me? Is divorce not enough to get rid of you? Do I have to leave this world entirely to be free of you?”

A flicker of raw hurt flashed across his eyes, disbelief laced with pain. “Sharon… am I really

so loathsome to you?” 1

Sharon’s lips curved into a mocking smile.

“Only just realizing it now? This past year, you and Kelly haven’t only disgusted me, you’ve made me sick. Just the sight of the two of you turns my stomach.”

Her gaze stabbed into him, sharp and merciless, and it burned his

eyes.

A shadow of fury crossed his expression.

“Then who do you like? Xavier? Is it because of him that you abandoned your husband and

child, that you divorced me?” 1

Sharon had no desire to dredge up old grievances. He never admitted fault, never once considered that he might be in the wrong.

Her voice was cool and detached. “Because of who-or what-it was never because of you.”

Blood rushed behind Carter’s eyes. “So you admit it?”

She looked at his anger, and laughter slipped from her lips.

“Carter, why do you look like a man who’s just been cuckolded? Does it really enrage you

that much? At the very least, I only met another man after we divorced. You, on the other hand, were already tangled up with Kelly while still married to me.”

“I wasn’t-” The denial leapt instinctively to his lips. “I wasn’t entangled with her. I’ve already explained this to you. What I feel for her is only-”

Sharon cut him off, impatience sharpening her tone.

“You held her, embraced her, kept her close, and you still dare say you weren’t entangled, that you were innocent? In that case, even if I were in Xavier’s arms, what of it?”

Carter opened his mouth, but no words came.

And then he caught the look in her eyes-half smile, half scorn.

A sudden memory struck him like a blow: only recently, he had carried Kelly when she collapsed in one of her attacks.

At the time, it had felt natural, beyond reproach. In fact, when Sharon voiced her

displeasure, he had gone so far as to accuse her of being petty, of being heartless toward a

woman with a terminal illness.

But the bystanders’ comments he’d heard earlier in the day… they had planted a seed of

doubt.

Had he really gone too far?

“If you don’t like it, I’ll be more careful from now on. Sharon, you don’t need to retaliate against me by being with Xavier.”

Sharon stared at him, utterly speechless.

“Carter, are you deaf? What happens between me and Xavier has nothing to do with you, and it is certainly not about provoking you. I divorced you because I wanted to. I have no intention of ever reconciling.”
