Chapter 5
At a friends‘ gathering. Alexander arrived last and was made to drink three penalty shots.
Ethan Carter suddenly spoke up: “My cousin’s coming back. You should all come to the family dinner at the end of the month.”
The anticipation in his eyes was unmistakable.
He’d always treasured his little sister the most, never even bringing her around for everyone to meet.
The Carter family’s expertise in mysticism and fortune–telling for the powerful gave them an untouchable status in elite circles–no one dared slight them.
Everyone started teasing Alexander: “Maybe she’ll really hit it off with your lady.”
Everyone there knew he’d been living off a woman for years.
Word was he was with some nanny–that kind of background naturally couldn’t enter the Montgomery family door.
At first everyone thought he was just slumming it for fun, even betting on when Alexander would break up with her.
Who knew it would drag on six years with a kid involved, actually forming a whole family.
“When are you bringing her around to meet us?” someone deliberately needled him.
Alexander glanced at the guy, his tone cooling: Forget it. She wouldn’t fit in at that kind of event.”
The atmosphere grew awkward when Ethan suddenly stood to leave: “Drinks are on me.”
“Leaving already?” someone tried to stop him.
“Just saw a photo pop up on his phone–looked like someone’s hand was cut, all bloody.”
“Could it be his cousin got hurt?”
At an ordinary guys‘ night out, Alexander suddenly felt restless.
He wondered if Lydia had made it back to the care facility.
The private hospital director had just texted: “Ms. Evans still hasn’t come to pay. Should I keep sending people to follow up?”
“Her phone keeps going straight to voicemail too.”
For some reason, Alexander’s heart started racing with a vague sense of unease.

Chapter 5
He reassured himself that Lydia was probably just sleeping.
But even when Alexander called personally, no one picked up.
ne there.
He immediately got up to leave, startling everyone th
“Another one leaving–what’s going on toda
on today?”
Alexander had always kept someone watching over Lydia at the care facility.
“Mr. Lewis, did Lydia come back?”
His hands gripping the steering wheel grew anxious, and his plain ring–usually a perfect fit–suddenly slipped off and rolled into some corner.
Mr. Lewis paused, “No, Lydia requested several days off. She should be back the day after tomorrow.”
The negative answer made Alexander agitated.
“Got it. Let me know the moment you see her.”
He pulled over and impatiently rubbed his temples.
Yesterday he may have spoken too harshly, but Lydia had been acting strange these past couple days.
Even though they hadn’t seen each other in a week, she’d become so distant.
She even kept avoiding his and their son’s touch.
This unexpected behavior made him lose control of the situation–now he didn’t even know where Lydia was.
Alexander booked a late flight back to NYC, but ran into Ethan in the airport departure lounge.
Turned out
this urge
urgent business was picking someone up.
Ethan’s expression was clearly hostile as he stared directly at him: “Alexander, don’t you think heartless bastards get what’s coming to them?”
Alexander was confused. “What the hell are you saying?”
With boarding time approaching, he had no time for small talk with Ethan–his mind was entirely on Lydia.
He turned toward the gate.
But missed the person walking out of the arrivals exit behind him.
The first thing Alexander did after returning to New York was head to their small apartment.
Chapter 5
Usually when Lydia wasn’t around, he and his son didn’t stay there.
Instead they lived across town–the best development.
But his key no longer opened that door.
The door opened from inside, revealing a strange couple.
Alexander stepped back and checked the apartment number–he hadn’t made a mistake.
The guy looked at him warily: “What are you doing at someone else’s door? Trying to break in in the middle of the night–I should call the cops on you!”
“Where’s Lydia?”
Strong intuition told Alexander he probably wouldn’t find Lydia here anymore, but he couldn’t help asking.
“She sold you the place, didn’t she? When did this happen?”
“… I’m her husband.”
Husband–a word he rarely used in public.
Because his marriage certificate with Lydia was fake.
The guy paused: “Transfer went through yesterday. She seemed to be in a hurry–sold it to us for twenty percent below
market.”
But Lydia hadn’t mentioned any of this to him yesterday.
His girlfriend seemed to remember something and went back to get a box.
“This jade bracelet should be yours, right? Ms. Evans didn’t take it with her. When we called, she said to just throw it
away.”
Alexander’s hands trembled slightly as he took the box, but he still politely apologized: “Sorry for disturbing you both.”
Back in his car, he couldn’t bring himself to open the box.
Actually, when they mentioned the jade bracelet, he’d already guessed.
Lydia had only ever given him one jade bracelet–he’d thrown it in a hospital trash can long ago.
The jade beads had been restrung, even the cord was new.
Sitting
in
n the car, replaying her words from that night over and over, the memories felt like slow torture.
Soon he rallied–they still had a child together.
