Josephine’s heart felt as if it would melt into a pool of spring water. She wished time would pass faster so she could see Natalia soon.
Just as she was thinking this, Luciana from the after–school program called her.
“Natalia’s mom, several kids in the class have stomachaches, vomiting and diarrhea. Natalia’s case is the most serious. We’re on our way to Jovitas General Hospital now.”
Josephine’s heart suddenly tightened with anxiety.
She stood up, grabbed her bag, and quickly said to Nora:
“This afternoon, you all go to Group One to test the new products… and help me ask Mr. Keller for a leave of absence.”
As Josephine walked, she called Zachery, but it was Dr. Castro who answered Zachery’s phone.
“Dr. Maynard is in surgery.”
“Then please let him know that as soon as he’s out of surgery, he should go to the ER immediately. Natalia isn’t feeling well.”
When Josephine arrived at the emergency room, there were three beds, each occupied by children around five or six years old.
Some were crying, some were clutching their stomachs and shouting in pain, and one was vomiting.
She stopped a nurse and asked, “Where’s Natalia? She’s Dr. Maynard’s daughter.” At the mention of Dr. Maynard’s daughter, the nurse’s face showed obvious surprise.
She knew Dr. Maynard, but didn’t know which child was his daughter.
Pointing to a child who was having blood drawn, she said, “See if that’s her?” Josephine turned to look.

It was Natalia, her little face waxen, and all she vomited was water.
A doctor was drawing blood from Natalia.
Josephine’s heart pounded with fear.
Suddenly, it was as if she heard Belinda’s voice, weakly calling, “Mom… Mom…”
Josephine looked at the face of a child at the very edge.
It was Belinda, clutching her stomach and crying.
The teachers and doctors were all focused on the children in more serious condition.
Belinda’s symptoms were the mildest, so she was being overlooked.
Josephine ran over to Belinda, who was closer to her, and gently touched her pale little face.
But for some reason, her heart was still with Natalia.
There were doctors, nurses, and teachers by Natalia’s side, but Josephine still couldn’t relax, her eyes fixed on Natalia.
“Mom, my stomach hurts so much. Am I going to die?”
Josephine turned back and said, “No, you won’t. Let me rub it for you.”
Feeling the warmth of her mother’s palm, it was like the sun in winter–so warm and comforting.
Belinda’s fear melted away.
Her mother did care about her after all.
She felt a happiness like regaining something she had lost.
It was a feeling she had never experienced before.
In the past, when she was sick, her mother would stay up all night to watch over her.
But once she got better, she would forget all about it.
She only remembered her mother scolding her, not giving in to her, and thought her mother didn’t love her.

But now that she was sick again, that feeling of being loved by her mother had returned
Belinda felt much more secure and held tightly onto Josephine’s hand.
“Mom, will you stay with me the whole time? I’m scared.”
But Josephine was still watching Natalia.
Natalia vomited again.
Josephine’s face grew grave. She turned to Belinda and said, “Be good and stay still. The doctor will check on you soon.”
After saying this, she ran over to Natalia.
“Mom, don’t go…”
Belinda was scared again.
But her mother didn’t look back…
Luciana was, after all, a young girl, and it was hard for her not to feel squeamish when caring for a vomiting child.
When Josephine saw Natalia vomiting, she noticed Luciana frowning and instinctively stepping back.
Disliking filth is human nature, and Josephine could understand that.
But seeing Natalia being avoided made her uncomfortable, so she said to Luciana, “Let me do it.”
