It was all nonsense. Josephine didn’t listen, nor did she believe a word.
She only asked herself in her heart:
Could she, for Patricia’s sake, humble herself before these heartless people, just this once?
The answer was: yes.
It wasn’t that she wanted to prove how loyal or righteous she was, but because Patricia had given her everything, wholeheartedly.
Patricia had witnessed her at her lowest, comforted and encouraged her with gentle words, and selflessly brought sunshine into her life…
“Tell me, what do I have to do for you to stop making things difficult for Tricia?”
Shane handed the decision to Wilfred: “Wilfred, you decide.”
Helena looked at Wilfred with tearful eyes, afraid he would
go
soft.
Wilfred gave Helena a look that said, “Don’t worry, I’ll stand up for you.”
He looked at Josephine and said coldly, “Post a letter of apology on your social media account.”
Josephine had never admitted to any of the previous incidents.
If she apologized publicly this time, it would be tantamount to admitting to all those baseless
accusations.
Helena said smugly, “I’ll do whatever Fred says.
Shane pressed aggressively, “Josephine, are you going to swallow your pride or not?”
Josephine reminded herself that by walking through this door, she should lower her stance- especially since Patricia was implicated because of her
She was about to agree when, out of the corner of her eye, she caught Helena’s mocking smile–a taunt at her helplessness and weakness.

The words on her lips changed at the last moment:
“I can apologize on social media, but I need a day to draft the statement. Also, from now on, you can’t give Patricia any more trouble–not even a little.”
“Fred?” Helena tugged at Wilfred’s suit jacket, not wanting him to give Josephine so much time.
Wilfred understood her perfectly.
“It’s noon now–twelve o’clock. Eight hours is enough. Josephine, you have no right to bargain.”
Josephine turned and walked out of the ward.
Anger and injustice swelled in her chest.
She slammed the double doors of the ward shut, the two thunderous bangs echoing like the end of the world.
Josephine turned around in fury and, seeing Zachery not far away holding a test report, her body trembled.
***
Josephine sighed inwardly.
What was she doing? Every grievance has its source, every debt its owner; she didn’t want to take her anger out on the innocent Dr. Maynard.
Zachery put away the examination form and looked over at her, his face still showing signs of being startled.
Josephine apologized, saying, “I’m sorry, Dr. Maynard, I didn’t know you were still here.”
Zachery clasped his hands behind his back and smiled in a friendly, approachable way
He discreetly sized up Josephine’s outfit.
A shirt, vintage jeans, high heels–simple yet elegant, full of charm
“Looking for a job?”
Josephine nodded, her bitter smile not reaching her eyes.

It seemed things weren’t going well!
Zachery pinched the examination form, as if deep in thought, and didn’t continue the topic.
“Do you have time to have lunch together?”
Josephine wanted to call Patricia to check on her situation, so she declined politely.
Zachery didn’t insist and watched Josephine leave.
It wasn’t until a well–proportioned hand waved in front of his eyes that he snapped back to seriousness.
“Got nothing to do?”
“I’m not as free as Dr. Maynard. It took me almost an hour to consult in the ER, and Mr. Freeman had to cover your shift.”
Zachery ignored him and looked again toward the exit.
Dalton followed his gaze. “She seems pretty cold to you.”
Zachery retorted, “She can be warm sometimes, too.”
He just couldn’t tell anyone about it…
Dalton understood: “So, it’s hot and cold, then.‘
