Chapter55
The doorbell rang. Josephine guessed it was probably Zachery.
She glanced at her clothes, found nothing amiss, and went to open the door.
“Where’s Natalia?”
Zachery said, “She’s asleep.”
He brought his own slippers, changed into them at the door, and carried a bottle of fruit wine in his other hand.
“Thank you for talking to Natalia in the car today, but honestly, you scare me. My feelings are complicated.”
That was indeed the case.
To teach another child to fight back against your own child… she really was a ‘saint‘ to the
extreme.
“I really like Natalia. You’ve raised her very well.”
Josephine reached out and took the fruit wine Zachery had brought.
She was feeling troubled and just happened to want a drink.
Zachery said, “This is orange osmanthus wine my dad brewed. Try it. If you like it, I’ll go get you a couple more bottles.”
Josephine thanked him and placed the wine on the small bar counter.
She went to get some glasses, while Zachery went to wash his hands.
“Are your parents also in Vexford?” Josephine asked as she returned with the glasses.
Zachery was already seated, waiting: “Yeah, but they live pretty far away”
“It must be tough, working and taking care of Natalia all by yourself”
“Actually, taking care of Natalia is really easy. Ever since she came out of the NICU, all she

does is cat and sleep. She’s very well–behaved.”
Josephine paused as she was pouring the wine: “NICU?”
Zachery gave a soft hum, his eyes fixed on the glacier–patterned glass in his hand as he spoke:
“Natalia spent a full five months in the NICU after she was born. The fact that she’s alive and so healthy now is nothing short of a miracle.”
Josephine placed the glass of wine in front of Zachery, keeping one for herself as well.
“May I ask, what about Natalia’s mother?”
Zachery lifted his eyelids to look at Josephine, unsure whether he should say it. In fact, he wasn’t actually Natalia’s father.
He didn’t even know who Natalia’s mother was.
All he knew was that Natalia was a child fiercely protected by Claire Harrington, unclaimed by anyone, and the pediatrician had said she wouldn’t survive.
He decided to take a chance, so he brought Claire’s body and Natalia back to Vexford.
At that time, he had also seen Josephine at Marisbury Hospital.
She was also one of the people Claire had saved…
Zachery fell silent for a moment.
Considering that Josephine might feel burdened knowing Claire had saved her, he swallowed his words.
He changed his answer: “She’s gone. She passed away after giving birth to Natalia.”
Josephine felt a tremor in her chest at those words.
She didn’t know what to say, so she picked up her glass and drank it all in one go.
One glass wasn’t enough–she had two more, and ended up feeling dizzy
She told Zachery she was going to the bathroom, but after coming out, she went straight to bed and fell asleep.
In a hazy state, she felt as if something, like flowing water, was lingering and wandering

across her face.
It tickled and felt uncomfortable.
She grabbed it with both hands, turned over, and pressed it under her face.
It was rough, like there were little pebbles, making her face ache.
She frowned and tossed the thing aside.
Suddenly, there was a warm sensation on her forehead.
It came so suddenly that she didn’t have time to savor it before it disappeared.
Someone was by her ear, calling her name as if summoning her soul:
“Josephine, Josephine…”
Josephine mumbled in response, “Mm. I’m here.”
