Chapter 56
Now, it had come back to bite her.
She took off her headphones, crossed her arms, and looked down at the road, her mind racing as she tried to figure out a new path forward.
Her phone vibrated in her hand.
Wilfred sent a message: “I’m at the main entrance of Opal Heights. Come out now and sign the Rose Manor transfer agreement.”
Josephine deleted the message without hesitation.
She returned to Building 3 with an expressionless face.
Calmly, she took a shower, changed clothes, did her makeup, and went to the restaurant for breakfast.
She put the fact that Wilfred was waiting at the door out of her mind.
Natalia rushed over to Josephine like a gust of wind, clinging to her leg: “Josie.”
Seeing that Natalia had regained her energy and radiance, Josephine felt truly gratified.
“Dad fixed my camera for me yesterday… The photos of us feeding the swans were also backed up in advance by Dad, so they weren’t lost.”
“Oh, really?” Josephine glanced at Zachery.
“Then Natalia’s dad is really amazing.”
Zachery humbly replied, “Natalia’s Josie is even more amazing–she makes microchips, after
all.”
Josephine said, “Natalia’s dad can save lives.”
Zachery replied, “Natalia’s Josie can drive social progress.”
The two praised each other, while Natalia listened, covering her mouth and giggling. The atmosphere was almost too good to be true.

Josephine and Natalia found a seat by the window, while Zachery went to get their favorite foods.
Josephine gazed at the pink camera hanging around Natalia’s neck, momentarily lost in thought.
After taking photos with a camera or camcorder, you often had to wait a long time, sometimes until the next day, to get the pictures.
If something went wrong with the equipment, like what happened to Natalia yesterday, everything could be lost.
Could she design a chip that not only improved photography performance but also automatically uploaded photos to the cloud in seconds?!
“What are you thinking about?”
Zachery brought Josephine a small bowl of Marisbury dishes and some noodles.
Josephine’s thoughts snapped back to the present, her attention fully on the hometown food. She replied simply, “Thinking about work.”
“How come there are Marisbury dishes today?”
Josephine couldn’t wait to pick up her fork.
Zachery sat down and said slowly, “I heard there’s a new chef from Marisbury.”
“Then I’m in luck,” Josephine said, eating happily.
Zachery’s lips curled into a slight smile. He reached out and gently brushed aside the fine hair on Josephine’s forehead.
Josephine paused mid–bite, and Zachery was also momentarily stunned. The two looked at each other, and it felt as if the air around them had frozen.
Natalia giggled mischievously, snapping them out of it.
They both pretended nothing had happened and went about their business.
After finishing breakfast, Natalia had to go to school.
Zachery asked Josephine, “Shall we go? I can give you a ride to work.”

Josephine quickly replied, “No need, Wilfred is waiting for me at the east gate. I have something to discuss with him.”
Zachery hesitated for a moment, then smiled faintly and nodded.
Natalia waved, “Bye, Josie.”

The sky was still oppressively gray, as if it could rain again at any moment. The heaviness in the air made it hard to breathe.
Wilfred’s black Bentley was parked by the roadside, and he was leaning against the car door, smoking.
He had been blacklisted by the Opal Heights property management and was not allowed in no matter what he said, so he had no choice but to wait outside.
He had been waiting from six o’clock until seven thirty, growing more and more irritable, and Josephine still hadn’t arrived.
Back when they were dating, Josephine was still working on her PhD and spent all her time in the lab.
Sometimes he had to wait for Josephine all day, and he wouldn’t even frown.
